South Bank is always a mythical place of inspiration in London.

There I've always got London the best.

Trench movie is not so good.

Peter Jackson did it with RED more nicely in CTL a year ago.

Peter made a tension that was a part of the movie action/story.

There are very old lessons in film directing about that.

That starting with D. W. Griffith and Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein to the present.

MTV music spot is easy to do with all film/video post effects but when one day you jump

in a narrative movie structure then you could show how you are really good

DP/Cinematographer or even Director.

Considering the limited shooting time he had to work with, I though The Trench was well done. He also is honest, in that he attributes much of those lovely looks to Magic Bullet. I respect his talent and humility.

Beautiful and artsy, but the first thing I can't help wondering is if he had a special permit to shoot in a train station. Terrorism suspicions has everyone jumpy lately. Is it different in the UK than the US?

Come on Sanjin,

Don't compare Phillip to PJ, the Trench is not great, but it certainly is better than a lot of stuff out there made with far bigger budgets. For whatever is worth, seeing all of Phillip's EX-1/Letus shorts convinced me that this is the combo I want to buy now that we're replacing all of our old cameras. I won't be using RED for every little project we get and I want something that will look this good for a lot of quick and cheap work. Phillip's work showed the potential this camera has for such situations.

OK guys, I agree and don't get me wrong.

Philip Bloom is a good DP/Director and also

Sony EX1/Letus Extreme 35mm adapter is

a nice B (or A) camera kit.

I just watched the South Bank clip... it's nice looking stuff, but it's mostly a combination of the use of fast/slow motion, shallow depth of field, and color correction that makes the material seem interesting IMO. Two of those three are just camera gimmicks/settings and the third, as has been mentioned, was mostly the result of a software plugin. I didn't find it too engaging from a story perspective. I do think he has a good eye for composition, although I found the tilt-shift stuff (or whatever it was) to be really distracting. Maybe if it was in more of a narrative format I would appreciate it more.

Phil is a very creative videographer and has a keen eye for detail that a lot of pros out there wish they had, and yet they don't. His body of work is consistently good and he has become the source of inspiration to many shooters out there. Read his blog.

The negative criticism over 'The Trench' may be accurate but still is undeserved. If you consider the circumstances under which it got shot, it's clearly worth of merit. To compare it to Peter Jackson's 'The Crossing' is not fair at all. There is no basis for a comparison other than subject matter (and then at large).

All things considered, I'd be happy to work with him on a shoot any day. RED or not.

Keep up the good work, Phil!

If Red would like to give me one then yes please.

Until I have the work that could justify one I will stick with what I have. Most of my work if documentary and the Red really is not designed for that.

I do find the comparisons between my little promo for The Trench short film and The Crossing to be utterly bizarre.

One is a short film for a museum, knocked out in 5 hours, using a handful of extras with one take per scene due to the lack of money for extra explosions. The other is Oscar winning director's film using the Red with a lot of resources and money behind him. It was never meant to compete. I was hired by the director who himself was hired by the museum of that particular Army company who fought the first WW1 battle.

If you gave me all the money and resources that Peter Jackson had it still would not have been as good as his. He has the talent, the experience, a great experienced DP and much much more. I am a documentary cameraman and director with no experience in explosions apart from the real thing in war zones.

One day I hope I can be as good as Peter, or his DP. Until that point I am trying to utmost to get better and better ever day.

My EX1 and Letus combo has been a wonderful find for me and all these other shorts you talk about, including my new one, TENT ROCK in New Mexico, is just me messing around enjoying myself. Filming is my job and also my passion. So when I get a a spare moment and see something stunning I want to capture it, put it to music and stick it on my site. These aren't narrative, apart from My Autumn's Done Come, they are just moving "art" if you will.

I am coming to NAB for the whole gig, I have never used a RED but am very keen to try it out. Everything I have seen is truly wonderful.

I think Phil's work goes to show that you don't need fancy toys to make great images, you need a good eye, without that the best camera in the world can't help you. Rock on Phil, I shot 2 weekends in a row with the EX1, great little thing it is

Kidding me?
Composition is incredible in that clip.
Look at the shots of the ferris wheel, next to tree buds.
That's on another level. True talent.
