I haven't got my red one yet... so i can't judge on that basis. However I do shoot Digital Still raws a lot on the Nikon d2. The best CF card reader that I have found and used is LEXAR. It should be the same principal in terms of transferring data across to laptop or computer.

This one is a bit pricy but its firewire 800 which means pretty fast.

Don't know if this helps. goodluck.

Thanks Ziad. I figured the cheap one was... well cheap. Just wanted to get a second opinion.

I use the LEXAR all the time and it works great. I'm sure almost any card reader could suffice but USB is slow in comparison to the FireWire800 of the LEXAR. I would recommend the LEXAR.

I got one of these, like a dunderhead:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/303357-REG/Sandisk_SDDR_64_784_CompactFlash_to_PC_Card_Adapte r.html

I didn't realize that it was 16-bit! So, while it works, it takes about an hour to download an 8GB card. Bah.

So, I went shopping and got a 32-bit reader, this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T8CFY2

Seems like the ultimate: 32-bit CardBus, plus UDMA compatible. But it just locks up, tried it in two separate computers and it doesn't work. It works for about 10 seconds, copying files like a madman, then it just freezes...

The CF reader in my Dell 2405 monitor works though!

I can't believe we are looking at Walmart for professional camera gear.

I have used both the Lexar and Sandisk Firewire 800 readers. The Sandisk seems to have a problem recognizing media changes. Lexar seems to be the way to go.

I don't know if I would consider a CF card reader camera gear (I am excluding still camera gear) - IF ANYTHING, it's editorial/post.
I'm new to CF cards and while I have been paying attention here, I was just curious about the particular reader found at Wal-Mart. Nothing to be shocked over.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations to Lexar and FW800.

Go Sandisk or Lexar. I've tried both...works fast and fine...

Lexar does have an in and out for daisy chaining though.

I've tried a couple flash readers with poor results but like you, my Dell 2405 works great.

The Sandisk FW800 reader has performed well for me.

By and large, the Cardbus CF adapters seem to be slow.

I believe Jim Jannard, our fearless leaders', leader; suggested, back in early September 07, to use only fw800 CF card readers.

We use san disk fw800; actually wish we had bought lexar, as the RED CF cards seem to be made by Lexar and we are big OEM fans. however, we have downloaded over 100 terabytes worth of data on the san disks and not had any issue.

Mechanically I like the sandisk reader better, but the big plus of the Lexar is the FW 800 port.

The firewire 800 definately rocks. Are you using Red's CF or a Sandisk Extreme?

what about a sandisk with highspeed-usb? does it work?

I tested it with 2gb card and for this it needs 2min.
so I think for 8gb it needs 8min. ?

I got the Lexar about a week and a half ago, and it's pretty damn fast. (They had a rebate for it at Samy's making it pretty inexpensive, but it doesn't seem to be offered any more.)

Jarred mentioned a German brand card reader that he smuggled into the states that was pretty good. I forget the name of it now, though.

Its better to use Compact Flash to Expresscard adapters, you are no longer under the Firewire 800 Bus. Not that its a huge bottleneck, but anything can create data loss. This is a different bus entirely, and gives less stress on Firewire, So Data has a lower probability of dropping out.

anyone else have thoughts about CF to expresscard adapters?

i have an older macbook pro without the firewire 800 and i don't think an expresscard to firewire 800 adapter is an option because it doesn't provide power.

i'm considering going with the delkin cf to expresscard adapter so that i can use firewire 400 drives.

otherwise i'd be looking to update to a newer macbook pro, but i'd rather wait until quadcore processors and bluray are available. seems quite silly to upgrade merely for lack of one firewire 800 port. any suggestions?

just saw that the belkin adapter only gets about 20 MB/s. that's a shame
