View Full Version : Rod size clarification

I'm confused as to what size rods the various parts of the kit have? To make everything crystal clear for me, I'm wondering if y'all wouldn't mind filling in the blanks:

Baseplate 19mm rods spaced ???

Red-Rail based on 19mm rods spaced ???

15mm adapter allows 15mm rods spaced ????

I'm confused as to whether they are spaced at 60mm or 100mm from center of rod to center of rod?

Am I still going to need an additional set of rods, etc for a follow focus/mattebox (I assume a yes)?

I realize this seems like a dumb question, but upon looking for information on "standard" rod spacing and size, google provided me with at least 7 options.

:help:

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what RED is doing, but standard mattebox rod spacings are..

19mm, 105mm on centers
15mm, either 100mm or 60mm on centers

Thanks Chuck!

I'll assume the 19mm ones are standard; but then which spacing does the 15mm adapt to? Anyone know?

19MM Is Standard in ARRI owned rental facilities. 15MM is standard with most large non ARRI owned facililities that didn't deem it cost effective to switch when Arri went with the 19mm rod system. In other words, both worlds exist.

...and then there's Panavision, who uses a 5/8" diameter rod (inbetween 15 and 19mm), sidemounted rather than bottom mounted. Just to make things more complicated!

Charles.... Maybe the RED RAil is Panavision centered, but turned sideways????
If it really is 19mm 105 won't work around here as we only have independent. rental houses.
I also would like to know the offset/width center to center of the 19mm red rods. I would like to see the 60mm support on the price sheet..... where is it????

We will not support Panavision standards... but will support Arri standards. An elite rental house in Holloywood has come by several times with equipment to make sure we conform to accessories already in the field. Remember that our system is modular... if we have screwed up somewhere or forgotten something, we will fix it or add it.

I'm going to bump this to the accessories forum. If you're trying to figure out rod standards and how RED fits into the equation, my 3,000-word rod FAQ (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8139) should help.

And trust me, if you find an accessory you can't mount on the camera...

...something's wrong.

is the RED LCD showing at the same time as the HDSDI outs?

No, that's why we have both mounted on the camera.

Yeah, it's a gift, what can I say? I spent 20 years in effects work before I moved over to camera... so these days I can do it without even looking. :)

Zombie thread... I posted this about a year ago... it's been more than answered since then. Look at Brook's FAQ.
