I just got my EVF!

So which one of the Eyepiece's that Filmtools sells is sized for this?
http://www.filmtools.com/eychamsmal.html

Secondly, which do people prefer: leather, micros or fleece? I've never bought one before.

I'm voting for leather, they are referred to as TBA's in the UK, is the same term used in the States?

So how is the EVF? Is it as good as advertised?

Yeah, I am keen on a user review of the EVF, if you have time of course

Thanks

Oh a critical review, yes! Even better. Focussing? Colors? Weight? Size?

I haven't unboxed it yet! Any idea what size eyepiece?

Hey Shawn,

sincerely I wouldn't put anything on the RED EVF as it is very comfortable and simply a marvel of an eyepiece, it is very soft and fits around the eye in a perfect fit.

But everyone off course has different likes and dislikes, just give it a try first I know you will love it as is.

Ciao.

You will need the round large version... preferably in RED :T

I like the chamois one that CSC in New York carries... the "Hamster's Asshole" as my friend affectionately calls it.
Made by BlueStar, in Canada I think? The DO make it in red now! ;)
Large Arri size, right Israel?

I have always opted for chamois, but now that I have read harryclark's description, I may need to rethink this a bit!

So no one was biting on the "TBA" name...

"Teddy Bear's Asshole" is I believe the full technical title. ;)

Shawn -

Go with the fleece ones. They hold up during a day of shooting. Something to keep in mind though, chamois tend to be replaced at the start of every shoot day and they tend to fall off (use some tape). As far as size, you gotta unbox the EVF and check it out.

Red would be great, but the regular one allows you to see the dirt/oil build up easier.

You can also call Filmtools and ask them as to which size works best. The price should also be for three and not one chamois.

The whole point is that you change them every day as a courtesy to the operator. I have been on sets where each person who will be looking through the camera gets their own, in order to prevent the fear of infections. DP's take their eyes very seriously.

Well yes, absolutely if renting and not for personal use only, them by all means do put something on it.

But again if for personal use only I wouldn't put anything on it, just wiped down gently with a moist disinfected wipe. They kill 99.99% of germs I use them every were.

Dale,
I stand corrected!

There isn't a camera operator on a Local 600 job who does not use some type of eyepiece chamois. It's not about comfort. It's about hygiene. There are several types of eye infections that can spread from sharing an eyepiece.

For camera operators, it's just like practicing safe sex. As a pro, you would never think of sharing a naked eyepiece let alone a "used chamois" YUK! Many operators even remove their chamois, even if they walk away from the camera for a minute.

Let's face it. It's been said over and over again, "The camera operator has the coolest job on the set." and everyone wants to look through YOUR eyepiece...The ad agency people on commercials want to look, certainly the Director and DP will want to take a peek, and your camera assistant will want to check focus marks while you're away from the dolly talking to the script supervisor.

Bottom line is that you can loose precious days of work from a nasty eye infection. Make sure that the UPM has budgeted for eyepiece chamois for every camera. It's not uncommon to change a chamois 2-3 times a day and most certainly at least daily. Why should you gamble with your livelyhood?

Wear protection!

The best know brand is Bluestar. Filmtools stocks all the sizes and colors. (http://www.filmtools.com/eychamsmal.html)

Hi Shawn,

Large Round is the recommended size for the RED EVF.

As for the material, some people like the classic, au naturale Chamois. The microfiber is a good synthetic material, if you have an allergic reaction to the natural Chamois - also, they come in a variety of nice colors. The fleece, I have heard people complain that it is too hot in some conditions, but is really great when shooting in cold weather.

It's really a matter of personal preference. They're all the same price, so you could get one of each and see what you like the best.

Go for the micro fiber, large round. You can wash them if you have too. Chamois gets kinda funky if you wash them. You need an eyepiece cover, hot rubber on a sweaty eye socket sucks.

i change it up every day.. and i take it off if someone else wants to look through my finder.

I practically have worn through my rubber eye piece on my SR, eye cups would have helped.

Sure thing Ben - all the usual suspects really - Arri, PV, etc...

You can also get them on ebay, believe it or not - although they're not the best quality I've ever seen, they are cheap as chips. I just got a set for a low budget shoot where I just know I'm gonna have to supply my own - £17 inc postage for a set of 10. Like I said, quality not great, but certainly usable for a disposable item.

If you want to go the ebay route, get the Mitchell style ones - 80mm OD, and fit the Red EVF pretty well...

Hey, is there one of higher quality that you can keep (and wash) instead of disposing?

The micro-fibre ones are washable and should last a fair while if looked after well...
