I realize RED won't have any kind of standard prosumer built in microphone.. So what are you guys going to use for simple run and gun fun? I have a Sennheiser shotgun I use in conjuction with my onboard HVX mic - I'm looking for a similar, permanent setup for the RED, a small stereo mic that I can keep on in most situations..

Idears?

I'd like to learn some opinions as well.. With my HVX I'm using an AT4073, It's OK. But I'd like to see what other people are thinking of. For general purposes, I'll probably still use this mic, but wouldn't mind picking up another... For anything I shoot with a budget, I'll try to hire a sound guy anyway.

And the gain controlls, are they... where?

I already hate the HVX solution (too flimsy and not very easy to adjust while you shoot)

I have got to a MKH-416 which I will use on camera. I am not a fan of stereo mics on camera, I think stereo needs a dedicated sound guy.

I want to make hit feature films with a cheap-o stereo microphone and a 4K camera

:) Better yet: Shoot Red 4K through the raw port to a Red Raid, Record sound with your cell phone, download your soundtrack through iTunes and do your final edit in iMovie with the 4x3 DV codec, ADR with the built in microphone, record to DVD but transfer it to VHS just in case they don't have a DVD player for final delivery...

bwhahaha - i'd say transfer to betacam via videotaping your screen with your brand new 1981 Betacam camcorder

I recently started working with a sound guy whose using a Schoeps mic with multiple capsules depending on the situation. I don't do alot of sound but I noticed the difference immediately, much better sound.

It seems kind of absurd to be shooting a 4K image and front mic-ing your sound. It might be better to invest in transmitter reciever that can free you from being tethered to your sound mixer when recording in-camera, or when you take backup sound on a dual system. Let the sound guy worry about the mic. Otherwise for run and gun invest in some lavs. A camera mounted stereo mic should be a last resort for the editor and SOUND MATTERS. Erase what reality TV has done to your brain.

I use a Sanken CS-1 short shotgun and it has proven a great solution for reality type situations. It is directional but short enough to not have too much off axis effect.
It seems to be a lot like what my ears hear as I turn my head.
I use it it with a KTek shock mount on my HVX with a little 1/4-20 tube adaptor that lets me put it in the HVX mic holder. On the Red I would just attatch it to the handle or top rail plate. I think I paid $700 for mine it seems to have gone up a little. It needs phantom power btw. Oh yeah I have a Rycote "dead rat" cover for it but I got a smaller wind cover at IBC that I really like, I will post that name latter when I have the mic in my hand.

The one situation that I can see legitimately mounting a mic on a Red is for scenic shots, where you just want that ambient wind blowing, waves crashing, waterfall splashing sounds. For that I'd probably mount a short hypercardioid, like my AKG CK93.

Hey, that's almost what I did for the anthem sequence for Borat!

Of course, at the end, we blew everything up to 2K and added public-broadcasting style subtitles in Courier with black boxes. I know, I know, I should have listened to all of this Red hype and done those subtitles at 4K instead. I am soooo kicking myself now.

I think the movie turned out fine, though. Made a few bucks ;)

By the way, the guy waving in the still photo of the swimming pool is me.
