That's pretty good timing :)
We're shooting 3 spec-clips on saturday and I really want to test my Sony 9050 and HD-Link + NEC 2690.
Thanks a LOT!

Good news, even if the Berln "HD InsightOut" event will have its end day for our RED tomorrow. Can't wait to hear the results on the shootout with F23, F900, Viper, Panasonic, RED, D20...
I've told our compositor Mark, who's helding a review of the "Cold Storage" trailer post production there, to explain that we had three new firmware versions since we have the camera. This is an impact for users of "usual" gear, as they always got a fixed system and very rarely firmware updates where introduced by other companies, other than fixing problems.
Thanks for good info, Jim, really welcome. I can't wait to see what else you haven't told yet about 15...
Early easter egg, somehow!
Btw, did anyone find an easter egg yet in the RED cam?
Like a pacman game being played in the back screen LCD or the like, using the cursor...?

Right, but from what you said, build 16 should be soon to follow. So no big deal.

I'm still on Build 13.
Then I'll go Build 14.
And then go Build 15 Beta.
All tomorrow.

Skip 14 and go directly to 15 unless it is a critical shoot. If it is, use 13.

You should do a Black Calibration every time you install a new build.
Remember to use a full battery and make sure you stop down the lens and keep the lens cap ON.

Uh oh, I haven't been doing that, we were never told before. I did it once after Build 13. Did the data stored from the black calibration get lost upon upgrading to build 14?

My personal method:
Shoot with Build 14.
CF with a Build 13 backup in my pocket.

No, but there are builds (like 15 & 16) where a black cal will make a difference. It is always a good idea to do it.

The Red Support page says that a Black Calibration is necessary when going from any build earlier than 12 to any more current build... you're saying that it is a good idea to do it with every install of a new build?
Straight from the man himself so that is what I will do as soon as I get back from visiting ya'll this Friday.

Its mandatory that you do it when going from any build earlier than 12 to any more current build... but yes we are now also saying that it is a good idea to do it after an install of any new build after 12. This will ensure you are getting the maximum image quality out of the camera.

03-13-2008, 04:59 PM
It is really hard to follow the warning "do not use this beta build in production environment" or something like that. Is there anything you know that may be wrong with this build?? I used 14 for 2 commercials and 2 shorts, no big problems! One issue we did have is both of our cameras would not boot up when we hooked up sound to in 1 and 2, not sure if you are aware of this? we had to disconnect then boot then reconnect the sound, no big deal and no more booting problems after that.

Is there any chance of knowing when we may have a "Release" build of 15? Even just a VERY rough time...definately no holding to the date just a loose approx date will do. I know how you have been burnt MANY times before for posting dates so everyone BEWARE only a ROUGH date!
If i have missed it someone apologies and let me know where.

Beware rough date... Release Build 15 in 10 days.
Beta Build 16 rough date... 20 days.

We test each build extensively within RED, of course. But you always want a phased approach via beta so feedback can be gathered from hundreds of users testing that beta build. You can never have too many eyes on this. We would not even get to the beta push if we "knew" something was wrong....

No, we are not tired of being slapped on the back. We get plenty of being slapped in the face, so this is a nice offset. :-)

Jim,
I have to say that I've never seen a manufacturing company treat their customers as well as Red does. I received my camera a few days ago, and I am blown away at the value Red offers. This constant improvement to the camera's firmware at no charge to the customer is unprecedented.
The direct communication that Red has with its customer base is fantastic.
The Red One is a killer artistic tool, and I truly appreciate the hard work, and hard decisions that shape the evolution as it moves forward.

DarkKelt, I think by now it should be obvious that Red is understaffed in engineering and manufacturing departments. In addition, it appears that quality control is not a strong point of Red.
Red has some very smart people which helps them to solve the problem they are facing in a short amount of time. However, what is surprising for me is that many of the problems arisen should be known to somebody who has developed a digital camera system before. Therefore, instead of taking a reactive approach after something has happened, a proactive approach encompassing proper planning to avoid some of the pitfalls should have been adopted. Their staff has people who have worked in camera manufacturing companies before, however, it appears to me they lack infrastructure and personnel in integration and production work flows.

Hi all. . .
I'm trying to download Build 15 for #791. However, this thing is CRAWLING along at 0.3 KB per/second OR LESS! It is telling me it will be 24 HOURS at this pace. . . and it's just a 13.1MB file!
Is anyone else experiencing this???

Stephen, you might want to start all over again as we just released a new version of Build 15 :)
PS, I just downloaded it in 16 seconds.
Thanks, BC

Joofa,
I've no beef with jim or red. the way I see it they've already over delivered in many areas. we have a system that has new features and new surprises every few weeks. I don't know a single other camera system where thats true. whens the last time sony let you do a firmware update on one of their cams for free. thats right never. they did update the f900 once and you had to pay for it. jims not out to screw anyone. he maybe over optimistic sometimes but Im not going to beat the man down for that. if he wasn't optimistic none of this would have happened in the first place and we'd be all talking about sony's next piece of over priced snailware. take a chill pill
RED will do right by everyone just as they have all along.

I read a lot around here, but I don't post and I'd like to add more positive feedback to try and further balance the weight of ludicrous posters who somehow assume they're the C.E.O. of RED (or at least on the Board) (or a majority investor)... who demand constant "briefings", (24hrs a day mind you)... demand features, feel personally slighted and aggrieved when they're not pandered to, take very little personal responsibility whatsoever for their choices, who beg and manipulate to try and get tentative dates then bleat relentlessly when a date isn't met... who adopt a victim mentality like they breathe (i.e.- without even thinking)... I honestly find it ASTONISHING that all of you at RED can put up with it.
I have a RED on order... (I work in a professional filmmaking environment, yes, with clients and deadlines and urgency)... the camera will arrive when it arrives, it'll work how it works... and I'll enjoy its continued development and surprises.
BUT BEST OF ALL - I have no questions for Jim or his team. :w00t:
Best wishes to you guys/gals at RED HQ.

Also, since there is a new black shading involved, is there any issue going back to 14 after installing 15?

As they say, the dumbest question is the one that isn't asked. If you had the camera today, you might find yourself confused on some of the camera's functionality. This board would be nothing but ass kissing praise without questions from users and future users.

IMO, a lot of people around here confuse the line between asking questions for clarification of use, and acting like spoiled infants demanding satisfaction. I have problems with the latter. That was the point of my post.
There is, I feel, abuse of the fact that they have a clear line of communication to the development team by bombarding them with absolute crap. Frankly, I find a lot of the attitudes embarrassing. That may be just me, but I am certainly entitled to my opinion. I'm not a fan of what you label "ass-kissing" either, something you might think is the other side of the same coin. If that is the case, then we're in agreement about searching for the quality on some thin line in the middle.
A benefit to RED, I imagine, is that they get instant feedback on a lot of their initiatives. Is it worth it to them? I guess so as they continue to be transparent, reachable and available on here.
Is it of value to me? A very small percentage of the site is and a small amount of posters provide some excellent information and observations and I thank them for that. I guess that's the internet for you... no news there.
