You should do a Black Calibration every time you install a new build.
Remember to use a full battery and make sure you stop down the lens and keep the lens cap ON.

we will start adding the notice in the release notes.
Tutorial really isn't needed, you just goto the system/setup/maintenance/BLK SHADING and follow the instructions on the display. ( the onscreen display tells you about lens cap)

we made some pretty significant changes with this build so its a good idea to do a re-cal.

I was on a couple of Phantom shoots and the tech would black balance after every couple of shots as the camera heated up. I was a bit surprised by how often it had to be done. Is this something that we will need to think about/do? Or should it just be something that needs to be done on new builds.

no.. the Phantom has a totally different issue where there would be a visible split after a period of time, and you would need to do a new black/white cal. I think they made it better, but back in the day you had to calibrate the phantom every 30 minutes or so.
Red is alot different..

Yes you need to BB the Phantom every now and then, several times during the day. You get visible noise unless you do this, and I prefer to do it almost continuously.
Thankfully, it's extremely simple and fast to do a BB on the Phantom, and it's one of the main functions in the operating menu. You just cap the lens, choose BB in the menu, click OK and it takes approximately 8 seconds to perform the function.
It's not a big deal, really.

This is a standard procedure. Basically, among many other things you need to figure out those parameters that are effected without any input light to the sensor -- for e.g., there is always some dark current out of the sensor, even in pitch dark, as long the sensor is on. These parameters need to be properly offset.
One thing that is surprising for me is that Red black calibration takes minutes. I don't know what are they calculating, but normal parameters should not take that long to be calibrated. A few seconds, such as what is reported for Phantom in the post above, is more reasonable.

as soon as you typed "normal" a light should of went off. We don't do very many normal things around here.
Our Black cal is much more than just a simple offset... which is what you want, because god knows you don't want to either have different noise levels throughout the day, or need to remember to re-calibrate after each shot.

Jarred, unless you provide more information that what exactly "un-normal" parameters you are calculating, it is difficult to independently confirm that things should really take that long as it is taking Red to do it.

Yup.. i would hurry if i were you. If you want something quick, throwing eggs at your neighbors windows in 120fps is always instant gratification.

Explain to me how the root folder works?
Also the anamorphic modes. I just gave my CF card and reader to the editor to download so I can't load it on to my camera to answer these questions myself. Does is just squeeze 16x9 to 2:35?

The root folder is just another container to help you organize files. Inside your volume will be one large folder called the .RDM that will then hold all of you .RDC, M for magazine, C for Clip. It goes with the whole machine gun theme.
It's likely that the anamorphic mode helps you compensate for anamorphic lenses. So the inverse of what you are saying.

Anamorphic lenses are designed to be used with the full frame 35mm 4x3 format. Also useful if you know you will only be shooting in 4x3 and releasing in 4x3 as in standard def TV.

Just working on theory here but would waiting for a half hour after turning on the Red let the Black Calibration work a little better with the Mysterium up to full operating temperature... or is the noise difference between cool and toasty negligible enough that it won't?
And still in the realm of theory, would a recalibration help when going from one extreme shooting environment to another?
