don't get me wrong. Red is offering an amazing amount of digital media options. The RED 1.8" SATA Flash 32GB Media beats the pants off of p2 anyday. However, sandisk just released another flash media at 2.5" 32gb for 350.00. Perhaps this could be rehoused as another RED 32gb drive option for maybe 1,000?

"The new 2.5-inch SSD is now available, however, for $350 (for large volume buyers) as a drop-in replacement for hard disk drives, SanDisk said."

Performance wise, SanDisk's new 2.5-inch SSD can move data to and from the SSD more than 100 times faster than a traditional drive, according to the company. It also will have a sustained read rate of 67 megabytes/sec and a random read rate of 7,000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) for a 512-byte transfer.

just realized that these may be the same drives housed in the 64gb red ram per jim's previous post:

"64GB RED RAM- this is two 2.5" Flash drives housed in an off camera SATA housing, very similar to the RED DRIVE case. This is what we believe most Professionals will use because of the security and speed of the unit."

There's a good bet that these or something similar are what's inside of RED RAM. Although, if these work for RED RAM, I would be surprised just based on the RED RAM price. I'm guessing the write speed isn't all that good on these Sandisk units or that consistant. The other possibility is that RED is using higher-quality drives from Adtron or PQI since they're targeting the pro market with RED RAM and they want to ensure the best possible performance and reliablility.

If nothing else, this is just a sign that cheaper and faster RED RAM style solutions are just around the corner.

Big difference between PATA and SATA drives.

Jim, I hate to pick nits, but the new Sandisk 2.5" 32GB SSDs are SATA.

All of RED's stuff is priced extremely competitively. So I'm confident RED's media prices will fall accordingly with the market.

Who knows.. perhaps RED ram may cost less sooner than we expect. But then again, the "large volume buyers" may mean some crazy 100,000 plus order for that kind of pricing. We also have to take into account that the red-ram is not merely housing two drives..it likely involves some special raid setup to achieve increased transfer rates.
