Assuming performance is good, it looks pretty useful if you want to use internal hard drives as removable media, which Red owners with terabytes of footage to back up and move around might find pretty nice.

It doesn't support SATA for 1.8" devices, however, so people looking at that option for solid state recording should look elsewhere for a product which will let them easily ingest that footage.

Good find, though.

Here (http://www.newertech.com/products/products_univ_adptr.php") is an even slightly cheaper device. It doesn't do 1.8" drives at all, but how often do you need that? Although the device you found provides bus power for everything except 3.5" drives.

On the topic of SATA, how do the two external recording options (RED DRIVE and RED RAM) connect to the camera? Both options are SATA, so does this mean you need to have the 'RED 1.8" SATA Flash ON CAMERA Module' installed?

Emery, there's apparently a built-in SATA port (probably with special connector) for the external SATA options.

The thing is that normal esata has a very flimsy non locking connector and requires a seperate power cord.

The drive connector on the red is a locking connector with power, although the data wires are standard sata.
