View Full Version : Splitting theforum?
Hope I'm not speaking out of turn here, but it seems this forum covers a lot of ground and it's getting hard to follow all the threads.
I think it might make sense to split it up into sub-forums dealing separately with things like support accessories (rails etc), recording options, etc etc.
Might make it easier to keep track of things.

I'm guessing that Jarred (or who ever would be in charge of that change) has either been too busy, or has a good reason for not doing so. But in the spirit of reduser.net I'm sure that user input would be carefully considered. What suggestions are there for subdivisions?

To be fair the forums has been far busier than normal over the last few days. Once it cools down again you'll be aching to read/discuss something new :). Having too many forums to browse is a pain in my opinion. Whilst I wouldn't mind an accessories forum discussion just as with the lenses I wouldn't want to see anymore at all.

Aint that the truth. This week has had more activity than the past two months at least. Although, I'm not sure how slow it will get with NAB coming soon. I think people have enough fodder to keep them talking/speculating until NAB open's pandoras box!
This'll be fun.

I was thinking the same thing. There is just too much information which is spread over many threads.
It would be fantastic if RED could have the info directly on their site as we are all asking pretty much the same thing... more details on the products on offer.

Paul, are you saying that, although it would be nice to have an accesories forum added, you think it is more important to keep it simplified (ie- stick w/ the current five forums)?

Rory, I'm sure that Red will be putting all that good stuff up eventually but maybe an alternative in the mean time would be for someone to create a "reduser essentials library." (don't look at me:umm: ) I'm not alone in saying that sometimes I don't have the time and/or patience to dig into the archives and I'm guessing that there are a lot of people who would use a reference like that to read threads that they never would have otherwise...

I'd say the forum has less than a month to cool down because NAB is nigh!!!
So I can't see that happening any time soon.

Hmmm, I'm wondering anyway how could REDpeople find the passion to answer the same question over and over again. It is getting boring somehow but in between you find allways some new and interesting informations. That's why I'm staying tuned. :nerd:

Might there be a method to their madness in answering the same questions over and over again in a forum, as opposed to just posting that same info on their site?

I actually sent Jarred a message a while ago about having an accessories forum, mostly because alot of the accessories questions were being moved to off topic, tripods, heads, follow focus etc, all of these things plus all of the accessories on offer from red have alot of grounds for discussion what with constant changes and new updates, new third party accessories and so on.
I hate visiting forums where there are about 25 different topic areas. Alot of the time it is unecessary and you don't get enough input into certain topics as you normally might. DVXuser in my opinion has too many. It becomes too much for each person to check all of them and so they eventually stick to the odd few and constantly check and discuss things in those ones and none of the others. Then you have those forum sections that only ever get the odd question posted in them and because few people visit them anything instructive, interesting or in need of discussion gets overlooked by the greater majority. I only use DVXuser as an example because of it's close relationship to this forum.
This week has been out of the ordinary given that a few days ago lots of people were posting threads asking for news, heck even wishing for it because there was nothing to write about. It'll be busy at times and it will feel busy which is good, but making the forum larger will only mean when it's not so busy it'll seem alot emptier and alot quieter.

After NAB and people have a RED camera (and manual) to use, there should be a LOT more questions. For the DVX/HVX cameras he's broken it up as:
1. General DVX News, Comments, etc
Latest info on current productions using the DVX, product news, etc.
2. Technical
Settings, technical questions, etc.
3. Hardware
Hardware and Accessories for the DVX100
4. Screen Grabs / Clips of DVX footage
Post your work for others to view! DVX100 footage only.
Cheers,

Jarred, I would really like a "User Films" section where we can start talking about our Red projects we are going to do. A lot of us are in active pre-production for Red shorts and features.

Paul I agree with your thoughts (exept the idea of trying to read each forum just because it exists) and although I prefer email forums (download, search, combine, filter & reply) this RED forum is pretty happening for NAB 2007. Thankfully I get paid to read tech forums (in education + sales) but I don't see how this forum will naturally divide itself into the related subgroups (lenses, drives, tripods, documentaries, comedies or by NLE?)
The 4K workflow forum is probably the best place to hang out when this one gets busy as the important info will get cross posted anyways. Maybe some of the new dealers will start their own support forums to keep their customers happy and surrounded.
Enjoy the noise as silence is the worst for sales,
Rosco

I don't believe in reading each forum because it exists, the point I was trying to make is that if there are 5 forums to check the thread titles in rather than 25 forums it's a heck of alot easier.
I can see a natural need for an accessories forums to exist but little else.

...except for the fact that, if you know exactly which of the forums a particular topic of interest would be under, choosing just 1 of 25 would immediately narrow down the ammount of threads you need to wade through. Nevertheless, I may agree with you, Paul, because, after all, an even better way of narrowing down the amount threads on your screen would be by doing a simple forum search.

I love forums - like DVinfo - that are pretty detailed. If I have a question, I immediately know where to look.
So my vote would indeed go for more detailed subforums, especially as in some years, the number of questions, threads... will be so high it will be to difficult to keep track.

I vote for keeping the number of sub-forums low. The current set and maybe 1 or 2 more as things evolve.

The split that made superb sense has already happened - Jarred created an EFP/ENG for RED forum two days ago. Check it out...
