Need help on moving to Protools for a feature

I'm thinking of moving back to Protools, this is my first feature and the tools I use for shorts/corporate stuff just are not cutting it. I am also debating stereo vs 5.1 for the DCP ( do people mainly do stereo for indie movies, do I really need 5.1 6 channel dcp for a low budget movie?).

I like what I'm hearing about protools 10 and 11 looks insanely good, but really i'm not competent enough really to compare products(i just know the adobe product i'm using right now isn't getting me the music score I need).

I'm debating going with HD, the difference between protools and protools HD seems to be a lot of cash and a step up in mental energy that I'm not sure I have. I really don't even understand why I need protools HD for 5.1 mixing (seems like normal protools outputs 5.1 in 6 channels).

Anyway, any hints/tricks/suggestions on protools and options for indie dcp sound will be much appreciated. Also best places for training (i have lynda.com, so i was just going to go through the training there). I am doing the editing in lightworks, so any best practices of moving the video to protools workflow would be appreciated.

Sync Sound in Media Composer?

A friend of mine has wrapped shooting a feature using a Red One MX. Sound was recorded using an Aaton sound recorder. A timecode slate was used, and I believe the camera's and sound recorder's timecodes were synced.

My question is where is the best place to sync sound?

My options are RCX, MC, Premiere or Resolve Lite.

My friend needs files with synced sound that will play on his three year old Mac laptop, to see where he will need to shoot pickups. I was thinking he could download the Avid Codecs LE and watch DNxHD 36 transcodes instead of using a more taxing codec like H.264.

The editor they have lined up will be using Premiere, but he won't be available for about a month. And my friend needs the transcodes with synced sound now.

I'm working on a PC that has RCX, MC 6, CS 5.5 and Resolve Lite. So I'm wondering which program I should use to create DNxHD 36 transcodes with synced sound? And, ideally, it would be great if the editor could use the proxy files I create for his offline editing Premiere and be able to relink to the .R3D masters.

There is also a chance that I might do a rough cut in MC.

I've read in the past there is a reason to sync sound in MC over some other programs, but I'm not sure if that still applies.

Thank you so very much for any help or perspective you can offer on this!!

Transcoded from RED Raw files to DNxHD 185 8bit per client request.

Done in RCX with a REDrocket.

Im told that the Avid plays 1/3 of the files fine and 2/3 will not play or work.
Something about an error of file not long enough, and that theres a stop in timecode and that is messing it all up.

Can anyone give me some insight to what maybe the issue?
I no longer have the R3D files I do however still have all the Avid transcoded files.

Hope someone has some ideas.
thanks

Redcine-x to Mediacomposer 6 transcode problem

So I'm creating dailies from a Red Epic and a Red One MX for a feature and I'm encountering some problems. I am transcoding the footage to 23.976 DNX 36 MXF wrapped for use in MC 6. The transcodes seem to go smoothly. When I'm done I have the mxf folder, the AAF folder and the ALE. I copy the mxf files into the appropriate folder on an Isis partition. The media database rebuilds as expected. I import the AAF files into a bin and most show up as expected, but about 25% of them are offline. Relinking does nothing. Refreshing the database does nothing. Rebuilding the media database files by throwing them away rebuilds database, but does not bring the problem clips online. When I return to Redcine X, the problem clips are all there (not corrupt) and there is nothing particularly unique about the ones that didn't transfer. I run another batch of the problem clips and most are fine but there are still a few that have the same issue. By this process of refinement, the job gets done but it's quite the PITA.

I'm running Redcine-X build 17.27144 with a red rocket with 1.1.16.11 firmware on a plenty powerful westmere macpro running OSX 10.7.4. Raw files are read from a Gig-E connected Isilon file server and transcodes have been written to the desktop (where I move them to the Isilon partition). Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance.
