I just upgraded to the Epic and am bummed to see that my little button mic guy isn't registering. Perhaps my settings are wrong somehow? I searched through the settings that came default and they seem to be fine, I can see the levels up there and they peak when I mess with the jack but it won't pick up any audio normally. Maybe there's another option I'm missing?
This is my button mic that worked before with the Scarlet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Dear REDUsers,

I have a small personal project coming up and I have no choice but to record audio directly into my Scarlet via some sort of on-board mic. I'm well aware of all the reasons why I should NOT do this. However, putting experience and wisdom aside, I'm looking for recommendations for the best-case scenario here. In other words, what's the very best on-board mic for use with a Scarlet?

I was hoping that this was Rode product would be available by now, but alas, it's still in limbo: http://www.rodemic.com/vmhd

Anything else similar on the market?

Thanks in advance,

So we are just getting started as a production team using Red. We currently have a Red Epic and Scarlett both scheduled to be upgraded to Dragon...

So we are just getting started as a production team using Red. We currently have a Red Epic and Scarlett both scheduled to be upgraded to Dragon asap. After several shoots with the camera getting used to it I have finally had enough of just using a condenser mic attached to the camera. I am hoping for some feedback on whether the equipment I am looking at will work well with the Red and if there are any cheaper options that should work just as well. So after doing some research I have come across a Lav mic package (Sennheiser ew 100-ENG G3) which appears to be a good starting point at least for the wireless transmitter and receiver. The kit also comes with a plug on XLR transmitter which I feel would work good with the boom mic that I currently do not have XLR cables for. Another concern is that I want to make sure I have my mind in the right place on recording audio. In the past I have typically used cameras with XLR inputs built on them and I know the red has the smaller inputs on the back I just want to make sure how many sound devices I can run into this camera because I keep reading people saying you can record using the 3.5mm input on the camera and I have never used that method in the past on any other camera. I have looked at the Meizler Audio Cable which provides 2 XLR ports from the audio port built on the red. I am still curious what the red's audio ports are called and if those are the only inputs you can record through, I know the +1 adapter adds another.

I am interested in the Countryman B6 .1" diameter lav mic because of its size, and the Zoom H4n recorder as an external secondary audio option. As for mixers and recorders I am leaning towards the 664 field mixer though it is very expensive. I have looked at the 702T field recorder as well and I know the 664 is primarily a mixer and my recorded audio will probably be much better with the 702T. Should I get both? Would the 664 be good enough all around? Are there cheaper options that would work just as well?

Thank you I appreciate all feedback and am interested to see what other good options are out there!

Hi guys.

I am sure you can enlighten me on this problem. Till now I only recorded at 23.98fps and had no problems with audio. Audio meters are accurate. No problems there.

A while ago a client asked me if I can record at 24.98 fps. When I switched the frame rate though, the audio meters disappeared and a yellowed Varispeed showed up on the screen. I am not sure if audio is being recordered like that cos I am not seeing the meters. I dont think there is an actual problem. Just a setting perhaps. Has it got anything to do cos i use the grey ssd card? I dont think so but not sure.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

what would be the easiest way to record sound while shooting variable frame rates? Right now i am just using an small Zoom H1 Recorder on top of the epic to catch some "ambient sound" but as you would expect the audio quality is not great and sycning all up in post is really time consuming. What would be the "best" way to do this with minimized work in post production? It should also work in an one man situation for outdoor filming.

Thanks!

Hello I am planning a shoot with multiple talents and I am looking for suggestions on a good audio package to run with the Red Epic. I have a boom mic I use (audio-technica Lo-Z Condenser) but I prefer the sound of a good lav mic when it is an option. In the past shooting documentaries I have used just one Sennheiser wireless lavalier microphone for testimonials and audio would turn out fine. I am curious if i should go the route of using multiple wireless lavs like that or if there is something better. And I am looking at two different audio recorders/mixers and was hoping maybe someone had used one of them and could make a recommendation or suggest something better for what I am trying to do. The options I am looking at are the 702T which I know is strictly a recorder and the 664 which is a recorder/mixer combo.

Thanks

SURVEY - Epic-X (DSMC) Audio Quality

Having recently taken delivery of my personal Epic-X with current phantom power audio board and Firmware 3.3.15, after initial testing I sent it...

Having recently taken delivery of my personal Epic-X with current phantom power audio board and Firmware 3.3.15, after initial testing I sent it straight back to Red Europe, as I wasn't happy with the sound quality. It's still under investigation.

PLEASE no comments on the lines of recording separate sound. Obviously the preferred option, but this is about using direct audio on an Epic-X, possibly via an A-Box or similar passive breakout, but not via an external pre-amp/mixer.
Would also prefer that this thread does not degenerate into a bitchfest. Keep it to concise objective findings, so we can see how widespread and common the problems are.

Besides taking the poll (specifically in BALANCED +48V Phantom Power Mode direct plugged mic, with no external PreAmp/Mixer or post noise reduction) - Most helpful would be short comments agreeing or disagreeing with my findings.
If disagreeing, please specify whether your camera is an Epic-X or Epic-M, and whether your audio board supports phantom power, or is the older version that does not, and firmware version.

My personal findings are ( especially with high audio gain in settings ):
- Unbalanced audio has AC power adapter interference when powered from mains, and camera fan interference (electrical, NOT acoustic) is audible powered from mains or battery.
- Balanced audio gets rid of the AC power adapter interference, but the camera fan is still audible at a lower level on Channel 2, but not audible on Channel 1.
- Balanced audio with 48V phantom power is noisier (hissier) than balanced without phantom power.

I initially thought that turning up the audio gain as much as +45dB or maxed out +57dB was unrealistically high. However, plugging in an industry standard Sennheiser MKH416P microphone directly (via Red's XLR adapter cable), +45dB is a perfectly reasonable level to record my normal speaking voice about 1.5 feet away from my mouth without distortion/clipping, and a hushed voice/stage whisper in a drama could easily require the maximum +57dB. I now believe using the higher Audio Gains is not an overly stringent test of the Epic's audio input circuits, especially as Red chose not to include a Line Level option, or to provide a more robust connector than the 3.5mm sockets in the Epic. Besides it should not require feeding higher levels via a separate audio mixer to keep the camera gain levels down. Sadly the Red One with the upgraded board seems a better camera in all audio aspects, and that is hardly the most highly regarded by sound recordists!

I did most of my tests with maxed Audio Gain of +57dB to highlight the interference and noise issues, but even at the lower level of +45dB they are still audible in the recordings, albeit turning the headphones right up to hear it clearly when not listening to an actual microphone recording. Of course actual audio will mask it, but it definitely still audible.

Also had the Fan set high (70% or 100%) - again to highlight the Fan electrical interference.
At 70%, the interference is a lower pitch, but similar level. At lower typical recording Fan speeds, the interference will be at an even lower pitch and arguably less audible, but it will still be there.

Note I didn't have any mics plugged in while testing, so any interference is not acoustic. It's either direct through the camera's circuits or by electrical induction. Turning up gain should only increase hiss (random noise) from a good input mic amplifier circuit.

One extra note:
Looks like the mains audio interference when Audio Inputs are in Unbalanced Mode is at least partly related to my particular DSMC AC Mains Adapter. Using a different one, the "motorboating" and pulsing/ticking sounds are much less, although can still hear electrical interference. Unfortunately, Red Europe have not been able to reproduce this particular finding.
My mains "motorboating" and pulsing/ticking sounds exactly like this SoundCloud file recorded by another Reduser tomspark http://snd.sc/HOhvbZ.

While it's unlikely that I would ever use the Audio Inputs in Unbalanced Mode in a real life recording situation, that mode does reveal how the audio input circuits are poorly isolated from electrical interference and mains noise in Epic, and shows where the interference that still exists even in Balanced Mode is coming from.

Balanced Mode is better, and usable in a pinch, but still not completely clean.
Balanced +48V Phantom Power Mode is noisier/shashier than Balanced Mode.

While I expect some hopefully low amount of white noise with gain all the way up, any hum/non white noise in a balanced audio circuit should not be acceptable, whether battery or mains powered, or the specification is rather poor.

I also compared a Panavision Epic-M with a Panavision Red AC Adapter - while the audio board was the old Epic-M version without phantom power, it's noteworthy that my Epic-X is significantly worse. Ie. the updated board is not an improvement quality wise.

Yes, I have a BMCC--lets get that out of the way. I don't know if you guys want any more information but feel free to ask.

things to note:
the xlr inputs are extremely strong--not TOO difficult but force is required after pushing the clip down to pull the XLR off

Using an NTG3 +48v on the tascam with 4x fresh eneloop 2000mah at 24 bit, 48k i had about 3 hours and ~5 minutes before it died.

I have a sampling between the mix pre d into the recorder and without it if you guys want to listen, though there is a computer in the background and its pretty rough. Still it does paint a pretty clear indication of the tascam's preamp vs the Mix PD

Hello everybody!
I`m having problem with my "audio out" over SDI cable in my Scarlet and Epic.
At first i tough it was the monitor (Marshall Orchid OR-181 and Marshall V-LCD56MD), but i tried different cameras as Sony NX5 in these monitors and it work normally.
What i`m saying is that the sound is recorded perfect in the clips, what does not work is in playback mode, when i do playback it comes with noise only.
I don`t think i have the same problem in both cameras (scarlet and epic)... any idea? anyone?
Thanks in advanced.
