OK, I've scoured the manual and Reduser.net and I'm coming up empty.

Does the Epic have an automatic power down routine like the RED One? Our rig has just been unceremoniously dumping out when it's time for a new battery, with no warning countdown like the One provides. Is this a hidden menu item that has to be activated, or does it just not exist on the Epic?

Latest firmware on Epic and Redmote, using RED bricks and x Jetpack.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if I can scale down to 4K Red Code RAW from the full 6K in-camera this will solve a LOT of problems in post, with hard drives piling up, etc.etc. and make a Dragon Epic WAY easier to rent, use and sell to producers.

This is NOT the same as the ability to window the sensor and crop in on the lens.

4K is perfect resolution for 99.999% of our projects which go to 2K and 1080p (and which have zero need or even desire to be future-proofed). I have yet to have any client ask for a 4K master. Not one. You can say they are foolish but we a service company and deliver what the client asks. Besides, why would they need a 4K master of a commercial meant to broadcast for 6 months or less? What would they do with it?

4K is perfect balance of play and room in post for greenscreen and so on, but not ludicrous overkill that will clog my and/or my client's post pipeline. I can't afford to buy Red Rockets for all my clients, nor to upgrade their often 5-year old edit bays. You can tell me whatever you want, but my clients are who they are.

1080p Red Raw would be great too - (again, scaled in-camera from the 6K full sensor). You could edit that natively in almost any computer, and get the benefits of RAW with no data clog of any import. We could shoot at 3:1 all the time (and do slow mo at very high fps that use the whole sensor)!

How much more would a dedicated scaling chip be? Ins't there already one in there for display? I would gladly pay extra for it.

Anybody else agree that this would be a fantastic data-saving feature?

I'd also love to hear what the guys at Red think about my "Black Shade SSD" idea (posted elsewhere).

It would be bad ass to get 5v OUT of the REDmote usb port...any one know if it is possible?

I am trying to power my Paralinx Arrow Transmitter on the smallest possible Epic Setup. Camera Powered by Redvolts.

I can and do power it via AB battery back, but want smaller config with my EVF or RED LCD.

Right now for smallest configuration I am looping HDMI through a smallHD DP4 (with Canon battery plate) into Paralinx and powering the Paralinx from the DP4's mini usb port

You can see the Paralinx attached to the DP4 in the far left of this image:
Here is how I'd like to have it:

Hi guys.

I'm spending a lot of time practicing focusing. Do you guys have any tips for how to become better.
I have the RED 9" Touch Screen right now. I have both Canon lenses and a few Red Primes. It's much easier to focus with the Red Primes and CFF1 follow focus than Canon. My jobs so far are documentaries and commercials. Worst situation i had was hanging backwars from a snow mobile trying to focus on running sleid dogs.

A few thoughts
- should I use the CFF1 with Canon lenses. The main downside is that the setup is less portable and doesn't fit in my backpack. Now I can just take the canon setup into handheld quickly.
- I'm experimenting with using 2 fingers for focusing (70-200) and then 2 other fingers for pulling focus after a zoom. Am I'm doing it right?
- Should I get another screen for another focus puller. So far I have been operating it solo all the time so have no experience with using a focus puller. What screen mode would they use normally?
- Normally I use the F(ocus assist) mode. I never use the edge mode since you don't really see anything on it. What do you guys use?
- If I'm unsure what direction I should focus I begun by verifying by looking outside the screen to measure distance first. Few things are worse than pulling the wrong direction and then changing your mind.
- Can you use the focus modes that the Epic that pulls focus for you.
- Are there any tutorials, lessons etc for this? I guess the real answer is that I need to be taught by someone experienced.

Right now I'm taking time every day to sit and practice, back, forward, back forward etc, seems to help a lot. Anyway any thoughts would be welcome. What tricks do you use?
/Andreas

Hi folks,

Just wanted to get your opinion on something. You get a couple of different schools of thought regarding black shading. RED's recommendations are that you only need to shade after significant temperature variations or very long exposures.

Some AC's have a tendency to want to black shade every morning. Couple of questions regarding this:

1) Is there any inherent risk in a daily black shading?
2) If black shading regularly, are default or current settings preferable (I tend to go with default settings). If setting the shading to the 'current settings', is it not risky over a multi-day shoot (even if the exposure parameters remain the same day-to-day)?

I want to get a feel for what other RED owners / techs / AC's think about that subject.

Many thanks for your feedback.

So I hear some people are using old Canon FD lenses on their epics.

What's the deal with these lenses? I look them up and they seem to go for pretty cheap, like $100-200 range. I know you'd also need to buy an adapter or custom mount for them to work with the Epic, but besides that what are some of their pitfalls? I saw some footage shot with the SSC versions and it looked pretty good.

I guess my first question is: am I finding the right lenses when I see they sell for that cheap or am I just stumbling on the more abundant, cheaper version lenses with this mount?

I have a Sync Bob Plus [from Space Cam]...love it!!!
I recently had a situation where my v-mount on the rear of my Epic brain suddenly got very loose..its at Red right now being repaired.
I can see that this small triangular mount on the rear of the brain is not as beefy as I had hoped, so I thought I should help it out with getting either a Module Adapter or a Plus-One Adapter. I like the idea of the Plus-One so I can use the extra port to run both the EVF & LCD...BUT, it appears [in a side-by-side photo] that the BNC connection of the Sync Bob's SDI out might run directly into anything plugged into the top port of the Plus-One Adapter [this being the LCD or EVF connection].
Does anyone know if these two items will interferre with one another? Or is there ample room for both.
I can see no way of testing this out unless I buy it :-(
And then pay a restocking fine afterward...
Advice?

Just have to comment on how smooth the startup was for the Epic. I received the brain last week but had to wait until yesterday for everything else... as soon as the boxes showed in my office I packed them in my car to drive to Kentucky. This morning I powered up the camera for the first time. From powerup to first clip took about 15 minutes (a lot of that just familiarizing myself with menus), and getting the clip to my laptop took maybe another 15 or 20 (that's without ever having used the red station before, eSATA worked without a hitch).

All in all... great 'first use' experience for the Epic.

I have a Cinema Products J6 zoom controller. It has the ability to trigger start/stop from a red button (see last pic) - it was obviously made for Arri cameras.
