Introductions, my name is Peter Stepnoski, first post amongst the community and proud to become part of it.

It's been a over a year since I've been working with my Scarlet. Still surreal in many regards. Being a long time voyeur of this forum since it's early incarnations, I reveled in the idea that one day I'd have a tool at my disposal that would force me to be better. I was fortunate to cut my teeth in film - 16mm bolex and very limited actual 35mm. Started doing timelapse with a intervolometer motor on the Rex and discovered how thoughtful the process of creating images truly was.

It's the thoughtfulness I love - taking the time to respect your subject and the tools at your disposal.

Over the years, had many camera systems come and go, each one lampooning that the images were to be better, easier to acquire and edit in post. Especially with the boom of DSLR. I will never cut short just how amazing it is that a $3K device can pull off stunning images. I've created successful work from DSLR's. With a caveat that I didn't appreciate until recently. It seemed too easy, almost diluted. Throw a fast piece of glass on and you got extreme DOF and everyone on set thinks you're a master. Granted, it takes skill to make a provocative shot and it takes great post to utilize it correctly, but there was this almost an entitlement associated with just being able to get this cinematic look easily.

Then everything changed for me.

The Scarlet was forcing me to be thoughtful again. Shooting 1080p and knowing you're going to web allows certain liberties in production. Corners can be cut, it happens all the time. Rates go down, crew gets minimized and expectations inflate. With those shooting scenarios, I felt that I had to compromise as well, in the moment it's a non issue. You had x amount of time to fulfill the projects needs. There is not time to sit back and ask yourself, "Is this helping my talents grow?". Shooting in 4K, mistakes become grossly magnified. I quickly learned this, reviewing certain shots and knowing that it could have been better if I respected what was at my disposal. I had to become more thoughtful in the images I wanted to capture. Each card that was being filmed was ticking away like feet from a reel. No longer the days of hitting record and just letting timecode drift by because you had enough card space. Speeding, slating, call action, cut. It was respect to the craft.

Then the day when I finally understood RAW, which took many months and projects to finally appreciate what that meant. It was film again. You had to trust your experience and science that the shot you were composing had far greater ability for malleability in post. The first time a client saw my washed composition, he looked upon the monitor and looked at me as I had spit in his face and completely wasted the morning's setup. Within two minutes, I had a shot previewing in red cine X with a crashed looked placed upon it and he smiled, nodded his head and brought everyone over to look. That's amazing, in every regard of the word. If this was film stock I could have potentially battled the person to convince him to trust me that the shot was okay. Instead, in minutes I sold the guy on RED and he still tries in every effort to shoot on RED. That's an incredible amount of power.

I'm no master, I just love what I do. I have a found a tool that forced me to grow and respect all the amazing technology and experience that has brought us to this point.
Thank you Red, you have certainly made me humbled in how much I have yet to learn and excited to own such an incredible piece of engineering.

Hi folks,

I am shooting a self-funded doc (during the development stages anyway), about the justice and memory surrounding the Rwandan genocide of 1994. I have to go to Paris to interview a couple of lawyers.

I would like to know whether there is anyone on this forum who can provide me with a sofa to crash from 22bd to 24th May in Paris. I would be very happy to return the favour if you need a place to stay in London.

Unusual request, I know....

Hi Guys,

Hi Guys,

I had this idea yesterday.....I always found shooting on RED has a very distinctive advantage over a lot of other pro systems.....the fact that there are a quite a few of us RED owners out there around the world....this gives RED shooters the advantage that accessories, spare camera bodies, knowledge, lenses and other bits of equipment are "almost" readily available in a lot of places around the world. Which isn't the case with a lot of other camera systems.....lets face it...if you are shooting with the Alexa or F65 in Nigeria and the camera craps out on set....how likely is it that there is a replacement camera body within driving range ? RED users there are a lot of us all around the globe, RED ONE's, Scarlets, Epics.....

So my idea was....why not create a website database, made up of a world map where RED gear owners can add their contact details and their location and every added owner shows up as a little red dot on the world map.
So if someone is shooting in Indonesia or somewhere in Europe and they want to see if there are any people in the area that hire out gear, they have an immediate graphical representation of who is where and what sort of gear they have. Which can give extra security to productions knowing that there is potential help available in case extra gear or replacement gear is needed fast.

I know a lot of people are probably concerned regarding privacy and safety issues, but this database wouldn't really be much different to this forum where everyone is registered with their real name, a contact detail and a lot of people list their gear in their signature anyway. Plus the information in the database could be protected by having to sign up first before it can be accessed. Realistically just a mobile phone number/ email and a list of gear that is available to hire with a rough location would be enough.

What do you guys think ? Could this be an interesting venture used by people ? I have a web server I'm happy to run this thing off, but I have no clue about web site developing really.

The one thing I think is missing in the RED narrative is that RED is MADE IN U.S.A.

I know Jim has mentioned this at times, but RED still needs a slogan that drives this home...something like:

RED, "MADE IN HOLLYWOOD".

Because unlike Sony or Canon, that are faceless conglomerates, or the Alexa that is made abroad, RED is a small, homegrown camera company that American consumers can be proud of.

I believe young, aspiring film-makers may feel differently about RED once they understand how local this company is (aren't all the cameras assembled in Hollywood?)

Not to say great products aren't built abroad, they are. But it's also human nature to root for the home team (it's why the French love Airbus). In light of Jim's most recent post, and his acknowledgment of how many Red haters there are, I think this "truth" is a compelling and important part of the RED narrative...that is currently missing.

Just my 2 cents.

One of the new benefits of shooting stills with motion cameras like RED are the walls that are broken down. I've never been a fan of flash photography for people as it makes them uptight. This is one time where paying attention to infants is a clue, they don't like flash photography. Makes them flinch. As adults, we learn to adapt, but it still makes us uptight. But when we take away that strange lightning strike, things become more relaxed.

Same goes for "stills". We ask people to "pose" so the camera can capture the "moment". Why do we want to capture a "moment"? Because we want to remember it. But like slow motion photography captures moments unseen, filming a scene versus the traditional "stand still and don't move", relaxes people because the shooting becomes more of a dialog with the subjects. I'm not staring at a viewfinder, but looking directly at them, engaging in a conversation. There is no "click", just a running dialog as I watch to see if all are paying attention, pleasant expressions, etc.

After the shoot, rather than giving a contact sheet or proofs online, I provide them with several HD movie clips. When they see a clip they like, they write down the time stamp and then we print that frame.

Just received an email from the client after they reviewed the most recent shoot. They said: "OK Mark we finally looked at all of them and were thrilled. We laughed till we were crying on some of them watching everyones adjustments and my directing and facial expressions not to mention the dogs and horse. It was really fun and cool. I am working on a list now. Just wanted you to know we have made progress."

It's fun to bring new ways of working with people. It seems peculiar at first, but that fades away very quickly as they relax and open up during the session.

A dedicated thread which people could post RED related tutorials in (only good ones without annoying background music and terrible sound) would be a great idea (by me) unless it's already been done then can someone link it?
This would make my day easier and safer as i could spend less time searching google before i place the phone of my dash and driver safer :)
