Configurations Thread

Can we (should we) start a thread devoted solely to the various configs?

Some users might have ideas that aren't as obvious or that may be helpful to others.
I'll post some pics of various setups that I have come up with very soon.

Thoughts from the nuts/fanboys?

(PS - I will from here on out refer to us [RED users/owners/fans and nuts] affectionately as nuts and/or fanboys. I hope this isn't offensive to anyone.)

Yes, please. I just spent 1/2 the day trying to find the suggested accessories / configurations from all over the forum so I can finish my order.

I spent many hours trying to get this thing configured and ended up ordering this barebones configuration from RED (which includes everything necessary to get going):
- Red One
- Red LCD
- Red Power Pack
- Red Flash (CF) Module
- Compact Flash 8GB (x2)
- Red Quickplate
- AC Power Adapter
- Arri 19mm Base
- Focus Hook Set & Bolts

Then from E.T., I'm ordering:
- Topside Combo (Top cheese plate + 2 15mm Top rod mounts)
- 19mm Ultra Rods 18" (x2)
- 15mm Ultra Rods 12" (x2)
- Arri Dovetail 2060/2575 12" (to mount on my Oconnor 50)

I'll post pics when I get my Red, which I'm hoping will be next week. Complete with Doug's Nikon mount and Zeiss ZF primes! This should be a pretty lightweight config.

I was thinking more along the lines of camera configs built for use on set. Not really what users are buying to great packages.

agreed. i'm AM trying to decide what to get, but i want to see how everyone is configuring their stuff differently so I can decide how I want to approach it.

I really like the hard drive/battery craddle mounted to rails on the top of the camera in a horizontal, laying down fashion (which I believe is the way the platters on the raid drives like to be) My 12" rails are mounted to only one top mount (front top mount, I'm still waiting for another one) this allows the craddle to easily slide on and off rails from the back. This also seems like the best way to balance the camera on a jib or fluid head. It also keeps the bottom of the camera flat so I can set it on a bench etc. and the rear of the camera is exposed and easy to reach. I can't understand why one would want the craddle behind or under the camera. I know a lot of shots of the camera set up, even on Red's site, show it this way but I've tried it and the top works best for me.

I am using mini 15mm stuff with the adapter for the 19mm rods, I cut down some 15mm rods to about 4" it works quite well. the chroziel stuff works fine, maybe not as nice as the Arri stuff but I can't spend 10K on a 19mm FF and Matt box.

To balance a heavy lens, especially in handheld mode. If you look on Zacuto site, you'll see they use some of their components on the back end to counterbalance the camera.

I've been using my cradle as you suggested when on a tripod. It works out well that way.
