    Hi,

Can anyone recommend the best settings in RedCine to export 10 bit dpx files to go into a Baselight grading system? I want to be able to do the least amount in RedCine and preserve all possible shot information in order to do everything in the baselight. I assume I would want a log setting, but am confused about which is the best option.

Am I being too hopeful that there will be one simple setting that I can batch process everything in this way, or is it more likely that each shot will have to have some work done in RedCine before the export?

    Many thanks,

    Chris

Depends on how well it was shot (exposure wise) but our process for "prep for Baselight" does in fact hit every shot for re-white balance and post-exposure adjustment prior to a Redlog DPX export. We have done it in REDCINE with Crimson - but we get much better results, much faster with Scratch.

    Just to understand:
Do you have a baselight now? I thought you had scratch?

And you get "better" results from scratch than from baselight, care to elaborate?

And faster, well, baselight is realtime in 4K - last time i checked scratch had to render redcode raw in 4K, or prerender everything and then still would have 2K display, not 4K as baselight.

i like scratch, however baselight imho is playing in a different league, especially the baselight 8, also pricewise.

We have been hired to prep RED media for systems including Clipster and Baselight - for other post houses.

No - I said I get better results prepping DPX files for other systems with Scratch than REDCINE.

Hey - I like the Baselight too (and love the Northlight scanner!!) - but you know - I am holding a few Baselight owners hands right now with my services using my Scratch system. I was offered a too good to be true deal on a Baselight system - still turned it down - the ROI doesn't work with all my calculations. I am buying another seat of Scratch. Again, Baselight is great - I just don't like the price.

Yeah, buying colorcorrection/online systems today gives good possibilities to negotiate. I am also on the ROI camp. As much i like baselight, i suppose the whole online/di will be commonplace desktop marketplace as its happened to DAW, NLE, VFX, CGI etc. within ~24 months. Now, if we could buy the baselight blackboard for clipster/scratch/speedgrade/lustre etc - its one of the -best- human interfaces ever designed for color work.

Hey Mark, 2 years has done wonders for the pricing of CC systems, still unhappy with the 95K price on a BL?

Baselight can read R3D files natively and play them in real time. Why would you want to convert to another file format, unless your question is about conforming on another system in preparation for grading on Baselight?
