There are Mini-XLR connectors. I believe the camera is provided with adapter cables.

On build 15, I plugged a cheap Sony PD-150 mic in via the adapter, taped it to a top rod, turned on phantom, and away we went.

Worked perfectly despite the fact I didn't have time to test it.

    Sycophant is correct...

There are four mini XLR connectors, but I don't know if RED is including the adapters for free.

RED gives you one adapter with the camera, at least I'm assuming they do. Additional ones are $50 each. There are 4 mini-XLR ports on the camera. I don't know if there is anything special about the RED XLR adapters or if others will work, haven't tried... I also assume it's just a standard mini to full size XLR adapter.

It appears the RED audio cables are not bog-standard off-the-shelf, but are specially wired for use on the RED. There's an entire thread about it at

Be warned - Phantom Power from the camera should not be used with the current build (15) as it introduces static.

True I'm sure, although I didn't notice it in my particular situation, and even if there had been noise, it would have been ok for the purposes of this thread.

We've taped on shotguns and lavs, but the cleanest scratch track would come from a feed from your audio playback guys system, be it a DAT or straight out of your playback source (CD player, boombox, etc).

I'd tell you that an editor we know used the scratch track for his entire offline, and we laid back the actual DAT track in online, and didn't notice a huge difference, but you might not believe me.

If you are using DAT, remember when shooting 23.98, pull the audio package at 29.97-
