Open Quicktime, open the preferences and check "Enable Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility." Then calibrate your monitor to 2.2, quit QT and open the QT files again.

I'm having the same problem. Followed Brook's suggestion, and my proxies still look dark.

If I open them in RedCine or Red Alert! they look like what I was seeing on the LCD.

    Any ideas?

They are dark. They only get lighter if you change ASA to 640 or even higher. If your exposure is not done via monitor but with a lightmeter this is a way to go.

For editing we transcode them to ProRes using Compressor. In Compressor we do the necessary crop and also lift the gamma.

    Yep, it's a gamma issue.

i am having the same problem. been doing what hans is doing, and lifting the gamma in compressor, but that introduces unwanted noise. i am hoping someone has the proper solution.
