The SD card serves its purpose when upgrades are to be made to the RED ONE software builds.

But I personally prefer and have used the CF formatted in camera prior to load the software in it and then up loaded in to the RED camera.

what is the SD card for?

You can also save your camera settings (LUT) to an SD card and then load them on another camera so as to have identical settings on both cameras.
