Is redcode going to be good for multigeneration?
Like HDCAM is not a multigeneraiton codec, but HDCAM SR is....
thanks.

Wavelets tend to be pretty good over multiple generations, however I'd think strongly about any workflow that requires multiple generations.
Also remember that REDCODE RAW is a playback codec only, not one you can render too as it's RAW, not RGB.

It would be nice to be able to render to REDCODE RAW in the case where you've captured uncompressed raw in order to get a higher frame rate. In that case, being able to convert the uncompressed raw footage into REDCODE RAW would be quite convenient.
Hope that's in the plan at some point. Would be a shame if the visually lossless compression that REDCODE RAW offers is only available in camera.
I sure hope it works that way... As that's how I understand it / think it should. Uncompressed RAW from the camera should be the raw data stream from the sensor at a higher resolution and/or frame rate than what the on-board processors can handle. Once captured to an outboard system, then an application like REDCINE could process that RAW data into any desired format so we can work with it -- even REDCODE RAW, just as the camera would, if it were capable.
Thanks Graeme, I was just curious about this, but you are right, I am not thinking to have multiple generations workflow.
I am thinking to this possibility, shoot 4k redcode raw, and edit sthraight with that (if possible of course), but about the hdd speed, it should only required around 30MBytes/sec, then you scale the 4k, in your viewer, to what ever your monitor is able to. The adventage is not to edit in 4k, but to edit without having to process the footage in redcine. At the end you export an edl, go into redcine process only the frames you used in the final edit, color correct, etc... and then export to redcode rgb if your compositing package accept it (of course) do your job, render in redocode rgb, or any codec/fomat, that will suit your grading suite.....then print to film......or output to any media, in any codec/format you can
thanks,
antoine.
Graeme...
The inverse of this brings up an interesting point. If shooting 4K redocode RAW
and desiring to quickly offline will it be faster to render to smaller formats than larger ie faster to output to 480 24P than 720 24P???
TJ, all depends. We're working on stuff with the wavelets that gives some advantages, but we have to do a quality / benefit analysis.
