  1. #1 Choppy 30+frame per second footage
I am editing on FCP - Intel 2.8ghz 8core Mac Pro - ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I am using Proxie_M Quicktimes and all 4K footage is running fine. I am
having great trouble with 3K proxies files made while shooting above 30 FPS.
Even when rendered they are choppy and rough.
Also I can't run 3K and 4K files in the same sequence without serious problems.

Can anyone help or shed some light on this subject.
We are editing an independent feature on a tight budget so need help fast.

What are you rendering them out to? Is your drive fast enough to handle the rendered out 3k data rate? It's a lot of data, and you'd need a speedy drive array to keep up.

I've got esata 7200 rpm 32mg cache internals.
    1.5 to 3 gigabit burst.
    All software current versions.
Yes a lot of data, about 2.5tb.

I would imagine Mike is right, you may not be getting the required bandwidth off your drives. All depends on resolution and compression. If this is the case there is nothing you can do about it without buying hardware. I would recommend installing a few identical drives internally and stripe them to a RAID 5 array. You might need a RAID controller card though, not sure how many sata ports the motherboard gives you.

The configuration of your system is very important. It's also always a good idea to have your media on separate physical drives from your system drive for instance.

If it's not bandwidth, you might want to check how much free drive space you have available. The fuller the drives, the slower they become.

Can you give any more info on the configuration of your setup?

Tis is counter to the fact that 4K runs better than 3K.
Proxies are a new kettle of fish.
Drives are separate media drives and only striped raid would do better.

Hmm, sounds like drive bandwidth isn't your problem then. Now I'm out of ideas. I'm going to give it some more thought and try to throw out some 3K proxies myself, maybe I can recreate the problem. Are you using Redcine to generate your 3K proxies? If so, what exact output settings are you using?

Wait are you saying your drives aren't currently striped?

    The 4k M proxies are 1k, I'd assume the 3k M proxies would be like .75 k. I don't have any 3k handy but I know I've played with them and didn't have a issue.
