Hey guys I am planning a music video incorporating ultra slowmo.

I am going to have the artist play her instrument 4 times faster with fans blowing her hair and dress while recording in RED @ 120FPS.

In post I would like to have these frames playback at 30FPS so it plays at 1/4 speed.

So far it seems that the NLE simply removes frames and continues to play the video at the normal speed of the event instead of stretching the time.

Anyone know how to acheive the effect that I want?

Which NLE? Different NLE systems have different processes. We also don't know the RED workflow yet and if you can flag clips with different frame rates than what they were shot at from within REDCINE.

Which NLE are you using? There are many ways to skin this cat. What I've done for similar effects is take it into After Effects. Here's an example. Let's say I filmed 1 second of stuff at 120 fps. Now forgive my math if I get it wrong but if I play that back at 24 fps that will be 4 seconds long. So what you do is create a composition with the dimensions of your clip but the fps of 24. Import that clip into your timeline and turn on timeremapping and change your one second clip to 4 seconds by dragging both the outpoint of your layer and the end keyframe. In doing so, it will then access every frame that is available to it...even ones that an NLE would skip in just simple time scaling. Like I said, there are many ways to doing this...this is just one quick way that proves very effective for me. PM if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

In Cinema Tools you can "conform" a quicktime file to change its apparent FPS - i.e. if you have a 120fps Quicktime you can change that to 30fps and it will play back slowly.

IMHO, this is a very tired effect by now, but that's up to you.

    USing FCPS,

    Thanks for the tips.

I don't have after effects yet but it seems like the way to go.

Like I said, it's just one of the ways to go. What cailyoung said also works. I personally prefer to have as much control over the my project to create the desired look in the end...and having my time controls easily accessible in AE, Shake, Combustion, or any other affordable yet powerful programs is the way that I like to go. But it totally depends on the project. If I wasn't going to be doing a lot of effects shots, then cinematools probably would be faster since then I would be able to import it into the NLE at that frame rate. Anyway, best of luck and hope to see the final project.

The following is an example of how to shoot 4 x overspeed with 720p as the operating resolution.

    1. Set camera to record 720p @ 24fps as the Project Resolution and Frame Rate

    2. Enable Varispeed, set acquisition frame rate to 96fps

    3. Capture clip.

    4. Play back clip - clip plays at 24fps so you immediately get the 4 x slow motion.

So NLE needs to do nothing - it just needs to be able to edit 720p @ 24, the camera did all the work including creating proper continous 24 fps timecode. Adjust above for 30fps 720p and you have your requested effect sonisfear.

Yep. No more Cinema Tools or Frame Rate Converter to re-time a clip. Then again, NLEs should be so brain-dead on this either.

Well that just seriously simplified the whole issue. Very nice indeed!
