    So, being that Red has revealed that a small-sized camera that records @ 5K - which surpasses the ancient 35mm derivative motion picture format in every way - will be be in production next year. Isn't this pretty monumental? Why isn't the media all over this? When can we expect to see the "EPIC" setting standards for the film industry?

    2 reasons:

    1st and foremost... Nobody cares. The populous at large doesn't understand the difference between HD and SD, let along whatever the hell 5k means. Most media outlets don't talk about this stuff because they don't think people want to know about it. And the people who DO want to know, go here :) or to DV, Videography, American Cinematographer etc.

    2nd, there's still a huge bias against RED in the industry. Even now that there are a THOUSAND cameras out there around the world shooting hundreds of big budget features, commercials, and music videos, there's still a huge base that thinks it's still just a hoax or at least not what it claims. And with companies like Sony, Panasonic, and Kodak as dug in into the industry as they are, it will still be another year or so before the masses really accept what RED has done over the past 2 years.

    Which should put us right around the time EPIC and Scarlet land ;)

    RED lost their virginity with the 4k, a fairly serious uptick in the evolutionary order. A 5k isn't revolutionary as much as evolutionary.

    I don't know if this is a jerky thing to do, but since it isn't coming out for a while I have a suggestion. And this might not be 5k, but it would be a very exciting camera. I've played with the Nikon D3 and it is phenomenal. Low light capabilities means you're getting shots in natural light with a fast shutter - stuff you've never seen before. This camera goes comfortable to 6400 ASA and higher with noise. A DSLCamcorder like this would be a mind blower.

    The catch is it has a larger sensor but instead of more resolution, it has bigger pixels, bigger sites and it just sucks up more light. It is 35mm sized, but like the still 35mm film format (horizontal) - like 35mm film or VistaVision. It could use still size full form.

    Downside? Incredibly short depth of field. Upside? Plenty of speed to stop down and get it back.

    Maybe another camera altogether.

    Downside - regular 35mm PL mount cine lenses wouldn't work, but rehoused still lenses could. Being able to shoot in such low light is very, very, very interesting. Candelight?

    There are places you can shoot with available light with 320ASA, but 6400ASA? If you can see it you can shoot it. And to be honest with you, if you were to shoot, say 12fps? It's more like nightvision. Uncanny stuff.

    There are many professionals who may be having trouble seeing the benefits of 5K, as the human eye can have a difficult time even perceiving the difference between 3K and 4K when projected on the big screen, let alone on a smaller monitor. But once the market's had a chance to mull over the range of options more pixels brings (cropping, windowing, Higher quality VFX plates, etc...) you can bet the concept is going to get a lot more attention...
