Took my RED out this morning for some early morning tests. Using 50mm Kowa Cine at 100ASA, 120ss and F 4-5.6. Still don't have an EVF or portable LCD so just winging it like I imagine they used to have to back in the early days of film. Used my DSLR as my light meter and exposures came out really well. I know everyone recommends 320ASA but I still don't fully understand why and felt that 100ASA seemed appropriate. I can upload H.264 clips if anyone interested.

ADDED: 1/8 size RedAlert JPG at default settings (100 ASA) for comparison to my RedCine graded images. Requested an account from RedRelay so I can upload the clips tomorrow. What's so amazing about this camera is what you can do with the raw images. You would never have this much latitude with video footage.

Next time you're up early, shoot some more and post it :) (love to see some moving shots at that time of morning)

    p.s. I'd watch some 2.64's

Love it! Well done, especially blind!

Would shooting 320 with ND have increased the DR and maybe it wouldn't be quite so crunchy? Or maybe this was a grading decision?

I'm slowly starting to get the whole ISO conversation.

    Hi Jim:

Forgot my ND filter or I would have tried both but I think ASA 100 was the right choice. That's what speed I'd shoot on my DSLR but I'm still trying to understand why I can't just use my DSLR intuition with this camera. What I don't know significantly exceeds the little I do. :)

Please don't blame the ASA or the RED for the "crunchiness", that's just my experimenting in RedCine. There is a TON of detail in shadows AND highlights that I clipped to increase contrast and saturation.

    Hey shooter,

That's cool, I thought grading might be the culprit. Can't wait to start playing myself!

    Hey Jim...

Here's a 100% size crop (1024 x 512) from the middle of the 4096 x 2048 4k 2:1 image exported from RedAlert with all default settings, completely ungraded and untouched. Hard to believe this is only 1/8 of the image and that there are 24 of these babies per second.
