SEMI-OT: Evin can shoot more than lens tests

Evin's too modest to mention it himself, but I thought I'd just let it be known that he has an exhibition of his still photography work on at the moment in LA. It's absolutely beautiful stuff. And not beautiful in a cliched, chocolate box way, but in an original, This is Art way. There were wonderful shots from all over - including a bunch from Africa that took my breath away and made me feel very homesick. Maybe it was the wine?

They're mostly big archival Giclee prints - and very reasonably-priced too. So fellow Red community members, go buy some - you know he'll just spend the cash on getting more lenses to test for us anyway ;) Plus, in 10 years when he's famous, you could sell a few and buy a Red Three.

It's in a nice little gallery in Beverly Hills / West Hollywood - the Seyhoun Gallery, 9007 Melrose Ave. They had the show opening on Sat so it should be up for a few weeks. The show opening was cool too - lots of wine and cute girls. Maybe they will be there again if you go there. I have a girlfriend, so I leave them to you.

Should this be posted in the Off-Topic section? Evin, maybe we can make this more on-topic if you can tell us what lenses were used to shoot your photos? They were pretty darn tack-sharp as far as I could tell, but I was too busy drinking in their unearthly beauty to really care.

That was really cool. Evin has been more than gracious with his time, approach to craft and massively helpful lens tests. I have really enjoyed what little bit of his work that I have seen... Bruce, is there a link? I am off to google the info any way though...

Go and see, there is sooo much more than just those photos. Also, the black and white one on the bottom looks stunning at huge size - all of those little dots on the horizon are actually huts in the distance, people, etc. Wondeful sense of the light and sky in Africa. Seeing it on the computer is like looking at a bad JPEG of a Caspar David Friedrich painting (okay bad example, some of his paintings ARE tiny). After seeing the real thing, looking at the web poster makes me feel sad about how much computer monitors suck. It's a great photo. His baobabs rock too - they are not stereotypical but scrawny and interestingly lit, plus there are some great portraits - he has some tribal ones a good urban one to break it up. It's good - he doesn't treat his subjects as The Other, but as a human to connect with. I was impressed.

Haha, thanks for the thought. I actually don't have the cash for a Red... have been offered a 1/4 share by a friend I let in on it early on though.

The only problem is that if I if I go to South Africa with someone else's Red and never come back, even if they got hold of and sold all of my earthly possessions, it'd probably come to less than 20k.

Hmm... maybe that's a tempting idea :) Go and hide out there with a Red, with a small, brave Zulu tribe defending the camera against people trying to recover it. We can barter 4k stock footage of tribal dances and whatnot for basic goods and cattle! Shoot footage all day, live the Red tribal dream, man.

Bruce if you have a "micro budget-viable/creative project" in mind let's go. It will be a matter of schedule and travel expenses, BUT one of the reasons that I signed up for this camera system is the social/creative networking that can be accomplished on a shoestring budget. There are many ways we can exploit this system to meet all the variables, we just have to plan,plan and research and plan. I am very lucky right now so... what is the saying-- "you have to be there too take the picture" (..tell a story, etc). I intend to keep the momentum going...

I am glad you liked the quote, Steve is a great guy and very generous with his time/approach to craft. I only planned to leave it up for a few days, I did not want to take up too much space or seem like a total fanboy-- these things are hard to discern over the web, I just wanted to give the guy major props for all the collective eye-opening, sharing of knowledge and support when he does not have to do squat.

Thanks for the kind words Andrew and Bruce. I feel like I've received a lot more from the RED community than I've given. To me, it's great just to be a part of this community and have the opportunity to contribute to the collective knowledge base.

Evin's photography and artwork is exceptional. Its one thing to be a good technician - there's a lot of those around. But to be a rare combination of high-level artist and technician, that's something really unusual and cool. IMO, that's Evin...
