    @ Matthew,

Just to clarify: Were you referring to the The A-DATA 350x-16g CF's of the 8gb Lexars? If it was the 16Gb do they work with build 16, all resolutions/frame rates (by all, I mean the same ones that work on the RED 8Gb cards)?

    @ Deanan:

Did you guys test the A-DATA cards, if so did they meet the RED specifications?
And a potentially controversial question: Does RED have a policy on which cards are disabled? Is it based solely on performance?

Yeah, I was asking about the 16 gigers.. I've used these lexar cards without any problems on my last shoot. Old Soderburg ones.

Sorry, I meant the 8GB lexar's as this thread is titled after the lexar cards.

I may well be wrong but I seem to remember someone at Red saying that 3rd party CF makers often exaggerate their cards abilities (that's kind of to be expected), but that also performance between individual cards of the same manufacturer & model can vary. I seem to remember Red saying that they test each individual Red 8GB CF card before they slap their Red logo on and send them out. I think the problem of manufacturers exaggerating their products, and getting everyone's hopes up each time a new one is released with great fanfare, led Red to have their 16GB CF cards custom-made with their exact requirements.

Incidentally to answer an earlier question Red have stated on another thread that the Lexar 300x 8GB cards are the only non-Red cards that pass the sustained write-speed tests for all formats & speeds, so load up with those if they're considerably cheaper (however personally I'd find having longer run times with Red's new 16GB CF cards handier, despite the price. Other benefits may be that you will possibly be able to shoots higher frame rates and/or Redcode 36 onto the new Red 16GB CF cards - I think they should be faster to back-up too, no?):

Hopefully Deanan will get back to us as soon as they do their testing. It would kind of be a shame for them though after going through all the trouble of designing their own.

I wonder if "designing their oun" doesn't just mean calling up a card manufacturer and saying "hey, bump up the speeds so they will work on our camera."

We tried that about 8 months ago. The response we got was yeah we'll ahve something in one month, then a month later we'd test and still way to slow. That happened for 8 months... We're hopeful that the Adata ones are good because the price will be right for many people.

There are some serious advantages to a custom design because you can really tweak things to work with the camera properly. The 16GB cards are also rigorously tested and qualified. Way way more than any other CF card.

I really think RED's only motives are to get us the best cards they can. And if making their own 16GIG cards is the only solution then they will do it.

I really don't think RED wants to get into the CF card business if they didn't have to.

    Deanan,

Please do let us know about them. At 350X speed and $210 price, we are all hopeful, too.

    Did you get it yet?

    Thanks.
