Last March, I was part of a really super fun project: I was tasked with DP'ing a music video for "for KING & COUNTRY".
This one had a different approach than the others I've done. The song this time was more upbeat, with a little humor and rhythm, but still tackling a serious issue.
So, after having several conversations with the director, we decided to shoot it on anamorphics, and for most of the video, B&W.
I then went to my friend Dan Kanes, that promptly supplied me with his prototype set of Orion anamorphics. I got the 40, 65 and 100mm to use.
When I picked up the lenses, I was really surprised about the superior quality of the housing and mechanics of these babies. But I shouldn't have been, knowing Dan, I knew these were going to be good.
And indeed they were. The glass itself has a fantastic look bordering on vintage, with the amazing ana flares, but without loosing too much contrast.
The music video itself was set in a TV studio, so for once it was OK to see all the fixtures and hardware, as they were also part of the set, and that made it super fun to shoot lights straight down the barrel.
I shot this on my Weapon Helium in 8K 6:5
95% of the music video was Steadicam, so I had to dust off my old trusty rig, and the location proved to be challenging, as I had to thread the needle going backwards through a maze of corridors and narrow doorways.
I would say that 85% was shot on the 40mm. There were 2 shots I had to do with my spherical Angenieux Optimo Style zooms, as I needed a 16mm for the wide shots of the 2 brothers flying in the air on a wire stunt.
Production was 2 days in a studio in LA.
