  1. #1 Pin out for the Red drive cable
Hi I'm looking for the pin out of the RED DRIVE cable. I read in the manual that the connector on the drive is ESATA. This would mean that hooking the hard drive through ESATA to a laptop would make transferring files allot faster that Firewire 800. Please let me know if anybody has the pin out or if RED has an adapter cable available.

    ;-)

Red (to my knowledge) has not yet released the pinout of their drive cable. The apparently put custom firmware on their drives to work with the camera during record; not sure whether it is strictly "standard" SATA protocol or not... maybe not.

At any rate, it is only a two-drive array so I believe the speed gain of SATA over Firewire 800 would be small. F800 (IEEE 1394b) can do almost 100 MB/sec. Red may be using very fast drives but I doubt they reach that.

When off loading to external drives if we go in eSata and out the firewire since it would be using different buses it would WAY faster than trying to put them all on the same firewire port.

Surely we can get an eSata cable.

The RED-EVF, RED-LCD and RED-DRIVE all use a multi-core cable custom built for RED.

So even if we published the pin out there is a high probability your cable wouldn't work.

Hence we choose not to do that.

ive talked to the guys about the esata. the drive is currently choked by the bridge in the drive and wouldnt be any faster with an eSATA connection.
