    We are finally ready to put out the SDK. Rob and Deanan have been working tirelessly to fix bugs and prepare a stable SDK. Look to the Workflow forum for updates (don't post here and break the rules like I just did). Stuff coming soon!

    Next stop... Adobe.

    Jim, I would have PM'd you this request, but I couldn't find a way to privately communicate to you. In lieu of that, could you please -- PRETTY please -- go into the audio forum and take new stock of the audio issues that are plaguing the camera.

    I'm well aware that the RED team have justifiably dedicated nearly all their resources so far to perfecting the imaging and workflow components of the RED ONE. Now that both those areas are just about where they need to be to fulfill everyone's greatest hopes and expectations for the first incarnation of the camera, I think it's time that audio was moved to the front burner.

    No one is expecting audio performance that will equal dedicated audio hardware, but I don't think this camera can be considered in any way "finished" or completely up to promised spec or expectations until its audio performance, features, and industry standardization at least rival that of prosumer cams like the DVX-100. Among the most serious problems:

    (1) "dirty" phantom power that makes it impossible to record decent audio with industry standard condenser microphones absent 3rd party outboard devices;

    (2) odd input level specs that do not meet the +4 dBu standard of professional audio and require cables with special resistors built in for consistency in metering, headroom, and reference levels;

    (3) noisy preamps and headphone outs that may or may not be related to problems one and two.

    The big pink elephant here is obviously the chance that some or all of these problems are not fixable except via hardware changes. You have always been exceedingly reasonable with your customers, and I think that most customers would be exceedingly reasonable with you and would be willing to pay a modest, actual cost of upgrading this hardware if there were a tacit admission that, in the push to make RED ONE the revolutionary imager it is, RED simply didn't get some things right with the audio in initial design. A hardware upgrade that fixes phantom power, recalibrates inputs to professional standards, uses standard pin configurations for interfacing with cables, incorporates a basic and optional limiter, and improves the quality of the mic preamps (the latter two of which are key to correctly terming this an "upgrade" as opposed to a warranty fix) is essential in my view to the viability of this camera as a tool for solo or small crew shooters and to the many coming from the world of video production and smaller budgets, where decent on-camera audio is a given. I personally delayed delivery of my camera recently in part because of the unusable condition of the audio for direct mic audio acquisition.

    If I'm wrong and these issues are fixable via firmware, all the better. I think the time must surely be near for RED to devote the resources necessary to making that happen.

    Please don't consider my remarks anything but the constructive "wheel squeaking" of an ardent RED admirer and reservation holder who one day hopes to own a RED ONE camera that has brilliant audio to compliment its world class imaging system.

    Joy. I love the camera, but double-system sound was our only option, to be honest, and I'd love to change that for the next feature. If at all possible.
