Hoping someone can shed some light here, as I’m a little confused.

For one-man operation, a lot of people have said that the DSMC2 Side Handle isn’t up to the task of pulling smooth, reliable focus on EF lenses, and have recommended using a Teradek Latitude Sidekick instead, along with one of Teradek’s Thumbwheels. However, the Latitude is plugged into the CTRL socket on the DSMC2’s I/O Module, essentially turning the Thumbwheel into the same type of controller as the fingerwheel on the DSMC2 Side Handle.

So, at the risk of asking a stupid question; if not using external motors, how is the result any better when pulling focus from a Teradek Thumbwheel, versus the fingerwheel on a DSMC2 Side Handle?

I found it felt way better using the RTwheel. Way more tactile.

That's actually a good question Dave. Beyond that, I'd be curious to know if the action on the finger wheel is roughly the same for most lenses. Moreover, for situations where you are pulling your own focus, I'd love to have more monitor resolution so I am less likely to think I'm sharp when I'm actually a tad soft.

    Cheers - #19

But does running a controller through the Latitude somehow improve the connection with the motors of the lens? Even though it's still going through the camera?

Electronics may be similar, but I couldn’t stand focusing with the RED handle. The dial Felt flimsy and way too small.
