How do you like your CalDigit drives?

G-Tech is okay but we like CalDigit better. The guy who designed the G-Tech went on to create CalDigit.

We have several G-Tech drives, and we're also using a CalDigit drive. The CalDigit has the edge in features and build quality, but only by a little bit.

We've also got a Facilis Terrablock - that sucker is a beast! Ain't cheap though.

we have lots of caldigit drives. i found the esata ones are working flawlessly. we got four of their FireWireVR drives a couple of months ago, and since plugging in our MacBook Pros to them we have had to replace fully FIVE (that's right....FIVE) logic boards on our laptops. the firewire ports keep getting fried, and i am pretty sure the root of the problem is the CalDigit FWVR drives. I am sending them ALL back this week (as two more logic boards just burned out yesterday) and replacing them.

Now, I am not 100% certain that these drives are the cause of our problems, but we have about 10 laptops that have never had issues until we picked up the FWVR drives from CalDigit. If anyone out there knows of another reason our firewire ports are burning out faster than Cheech and Chong, I am all ears.

That said, I do like CalDigit's OTHER products, and would still recommend them.

One disappointing thing is that I called their tech support for help, and to ask them some questions, and informed them of my problem, and I was told their chief technology officer would call me back within hours. Never heard from them......

Luckily, I have a 'hard drive guy' whose service (and prices) are stellar. He has offered to take back all four drives and replace them with any make I choose. He told me he felt really bad about it, and he wants to make it up to me, as he is trying to build long term relationships. If anyone wants his contact info., I would be happy to recommend his service. He used to work for CalDigit but is now on his own. I am in Canada, and even though he is in the States, I buy from him as his prices, and service both get a 'A' in my book.

We use a CallDigit Fire Wire Raid for backing up .r3d footage on location onto mirrored drives and are quite happy with size, performance and the swappable drives, which all live happily in a separate Peli Case.

We use the CalDigit eSata Raid 5 tower and it's rock solid & fast (pricey though!) Worth every penny in the long run.

I wonder if he also worked at Medéa years ago. Those guys had the best support in the business for years. A 5-year warranty is unheard of these days. They even fixed one of my old VideoRAID RT 's that was past it's 5-year warranty. Then G-Tech spun-off and Medéa was bought by Avid.
