Jarred, is this still the case with the current pandemic? Asking because every year we have a production budget to spend on new equipment before the year ends (for tax reasons) and was'nt sure if we should wait for DSMC3 or just spend our money on something else. It would be really helpful if you can let us know. We prefer to wait for the DSMC3 if its coming this year :)
Frankly given the pandemic-induced delays and the fact that the end of this year was the earliest possible timing according to Jim's post, I'd guess more like 2022 now. Red's engineers are obviously quite good, but Red was already jumping through a bunch of hoops to move manufacturing out of China just to keep progress going while China was locked down when the US got caught with its pants down.
I'm glad that Red is based in one of the states that has competent governance...
So......... are we going to see DSMC3 in 2021?
I suspect Covid has seriously delayed RED's timetable. But they continue to surprise.
Agreeing here. I believe we’ll see teasers closer to end of spring, beginning of summer. Then potentially upgrade paths released sometime towards the end of the year with cameras rolling out very early 2022.
I’ve noticed RED has usually announced upgrade paths in Spring / cameras released into the wild for Summer... but this has been a crazy year for all things. I’d assume R&D has been spending a lot of time on Komodo / the new software behind it - given this will most likely be the basis for what’s to come in DSMC3. I’m sure that’s changed a bit of the timetable for DSMC3.
Also, if DSMC3 is going to focus on VV sized sensor as it’s main thing, I’m sure there’s a lot of retooling in design that they’re going to pull off. I can only imagine how much they learned from Komodo, especially moving to a new board type. Excited to see what the new camera system brings. Really thinking it’s going to feel like the ultimate tool, through and through.
