Is it compatible with the current dsmc2 monitors? Or you need an hydrogen to use it? I hope not, even if Jarred wrote "not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen" so KOMODO + H2 = 5K . It would be awesome to have a travel RED Cam in the backpack ;)

Well ... it doesn’t have to be “smaller” just not 8K VV.

That’s an RF mount. So ... I am pretty damn sure this is a large format sensor. 5K / 6K would be my guess.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, it contains new sensor tech. Seeing how the DSMC2 system allows for sensor swapping, I'm assuming that, whatever size sensor is in Komodo, it may come in other sizes as well.

I imagine it would have to, if it's smaller than S35, because of what I hope is true of every new sensor that gets announced by RED or any other manufacturer. Namely, that it captures at least 2-3 stops brighter luminance values than the current heavyweight champ in that department does.

Overall dynamic range is wonderful. Being able to see in the dark is wonderful. Exposing for highlights and brighter areas of the image you want to retain, especially with a wide dynamic range, is easily done by rating at a higher ISO (i.e. underexposing).

However, objects in any environment are as bright as they are at any given time and don't care at what point your sensor clips.

The higher the luminance values your sensor can see without clipping, the more those details that were previously deemed too bright to matter become interesting mid-tone detail, depending on how much more brightness you can capture.

I have said many times before that I'm convinced being able to capture higher luminance is KEY to making the most pleasing images overall, along with color rendering. That's the special sauce. This was determined a long time ago with film but people seem to have forgotten that's what made it look so good.

I always get grief here for mentioning it but I also know whoever manages to accomplish it will be celebrated in the industry. So, here's hoping that whatever sensor is in Komodo does for capturing significantly higher luminance values (than what are currently possible) as Gemini did for capturing significantly lower luminance values.

Looks like a RED version of the Zcam. Pretty awesome! Here is my guess for specs.

    4.5K resolution up to 120fps
    Dual base ISO
    Super 35 sensor
    Canon RF mount (great choice)
    Maybe - phase detect autofocus?

This is basically a raven replacement with a better sensor and much smaller form factor. I think it’s a home run and exactly what some of us have been asking for for a long time.

Curious as to what battery solution it’ll use.

I told everyone that I wouldn't reveal Komodo until it was ready.. There still is a bunch of time before the first batch starts shipping towards the end of the year and everything can and probably will change.

But in the spirit of discovery... perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not :)

    - It is not DSMC3
    - It is not a replacement for DSMC2
    - It is not 8k VV
    - It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor
    - It does not have an HDMI port
    - It does not use proprietary media
    - It is not a “module”
    - It is not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen.
    - It has no XLR ports
    - It does not have a fixed lens
    - It’s body does not weight more than 2 pounds.
    - It is not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.

O.. and since Komodo is alive and breathing and you will probably see it pop up over the next few weeks and months in the hands of some very talented people banging on it to try and break it... I guess I can at least leave you with this......
Hmmm... not larger than 4 inches in any dimension and weighs less than 2 pounds with an RF mount, and just above the $5K price point... I'm guessing a S35 or full-frame C200/EVA1/FS5 rival with a Z Cam E2 size? Or maybe a run-and-gun cam designed for gimbals such as the Ronin-S? Raven replacement it seems like.

Oooo I'm excited to see what it is. Honestly, been looking for a smaller camera where my Epic-W is overkill. And I'm sure it'll still have REDCODE RAW.
