Canon C70 vs RED Komodo FEAT. Dave May

    By
    graetzmedia

Broadcast live from Australia, I'll be joined by my buddy Dave May who is one of the first in the world to go hands-on with the new Canon C70. We'll size it up against the RED Komodo and nerd out pretty hard on specs and where the C70 fits into each of our workflows.
To participate in the live Q&A, type sli.do in to your phone browser and enter the event code #13528

The Komodo, remember, is a 'crash' camera. Although customers aren't going to use it like that. ;-)

I think this Canon actually competes with Sony's A7sIII, and in that case it has some advantages over the Sony, and one of those advantages is S35. But overall the Sony would have to be my choice, as a DSMC or otherwise.

I think Sony is stuck in 2010 with their latest high-end cinema cameras. What are they thinking? Thankfully the Alpha division is allowed to compete with the CineAlta division.
Good production values may not be noticed. Bad production values will be.

    - excellent dynamic range (especially at 60fps and under) and low light
    - excellent autofocus
    - no raw (but they have stated they might add it afterwards if there is demand... I bet they will add it, they just didn't add it at launch to avoid pissing off C200 owners EVEN MORE)

I don't really care that it's not 6K. 0.1% of work needs 6K acquisition... and that 0.1% would have the budget for me to rent anyway.

I don't really care too much that it's not raw either. My DPs know how to white balance. I think that the quality of this image will surpass Komodo because the sensor has better dynamic range. If forced to choose between Komodo's raw with lower dynamic range vs a high quality log signal with good color, I'll take the log, thank you.

Of course I would like a vertically-larger sensor so I could get full anamorphic coverage.

Since this is the C70, that does leave space for a full-frame C90 - and it'll have 6K for all the weirdos who demand that too :)

Yes, R5's dynamic range isn't as good as this dual gain sensor.
And the 120fps would be lower quality because it would be binned.
Look at the dynamic range tests done by cined comparing C300 mk3 4k image to R5 8k raw - C300 mk3 sensor is simply better.

I don’t think it’s better in DR than Komodo. It’s a +4 highlight stops camera compared to +6 Komodo. Highlight latitude is way more important in feature world. Also no SDI, no dtap etc etc etc. clearly made for one man band. Totally different use case scenario

Are you sure? The rest of the cameras shooting canon log 2 have +6.3 stops of highlight dynamic range at base 800 ISO. But the shadows on the C200 (used to own one) for instance can be hideously noisy. So this was looking good to me.

Although I wasn't planning on getting one either way, I do think it looks promising.

Wish Komodo had some kind of locking audio connector.
