This is a big loss for the industry.

I've relied on their software for the past 12 years to archive 100s of TBs of data (most of it R3Ds).

They also seemed to have one of the better methods of data backup even compared to LTFS.

I greatly appreciate what Tim Jones and the Tolis team bought to the industry.

I'm also shocked and kind of scrambling myself Adrian.
I was also in the process of trying to recover an old archive that seemed to be mistakenly split
between a tape and a stage disk and had a support ticket open since August.

I'm also having an issue getting BRU Server working on Catalina.

This whole thing is just frustrating.

To me, Tolis' backup methods using TAR was kind of like the R3D of the archive world.

I hope someone might come in and buy the company's tech to continue it.

sadly the writing has been on the wall for years, we switched to Archiware several years ago and never looked back...it was a huge upgrade. Id suggest anyone still using BRU switch, its a major upgrade on many levels.

I beta tested Bru for Windows late last year. Obviously they could never make it work, but the biggest problem was that installing it on Win 10 wiped out LTFS functionality. Archiware P5 desktop was free for a few months this year and I can confirm that although they claim it only incorporates LTFS in OSX, it at least does not interfere with LTFS operation in Win 10. I've been using P5 Desktop to archive LTO 6 WORM tapes (which are NOT compatible with LTFS) and it works fine. I don't find that it's an easy interface to get used to.

I've been using this program https://www.wincatalog.com as a poor man's MAM and it's brilliant. Be aware that Windows will not preserve original time stamps when copying directly to LTFS, you have to 7zip them.

As with anything, try and stick to open standards. LTFS is the way to go.

Unfortunately I find the interface quite obscure and not straight-forward... I'm still looking for a simple cross-platform (Mac/Windows at least) LTFS software with checksum verification and a simple catalogue feature... Yoyotta, Archiware, etc... are all very complicate I think. Maybe Canister by Hedge ?
