Going forward many software manufacturers will be forced to transition to fully 64 bit compliance and that means Catalina OS and up. In that case you have no choice but to abandon nVidia GPUs for reasons discussed earlier. So, you might as well do it sooner than later. Jake, looking into the 580 vs the 980 ti, everything points to the 580 being "noticeably" slower when dealing with video applications and rendering. I'd hate to take a step back in regards to speed... Is there a card that would be noticeably faster I could be looking into maybe?

You must compare apples to apples. nVidia cards are indeed more powerful as they are based on CUDA. CUDA is a non starter on OSX 10.14 and up, by now Apple pretty moved everyone to Metal. So, your only choice are AMD cards. There are many to choose from, although RX580, in my opinion, is still the best bang for a buck. If you want more power and I assume your computer is 5.1? If that is the case, then you're constrained by the power envelope of that computer's mother board power distribution. You then need do a so-called, Pixlas mod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz9M_epdtxI or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p66XgjVZrUin order to be able to run something like AMD Radeon VII card (very expensive). There are many other cards available now, like AMD Radeon RX 5700 or even RX 6000 series but I'm not sure if drivers are ready. Again, majority of 5.1 users recommend using RX580 Pulse. I had it used as well and in my own experience, it easily outperforms 980ti and it has 8 GB or RAM, which is not too bad, but if money and time is no object, there are many powerful AMD GPU choices, up to and including RX6900 XT- a beast.

I looked into adding a power supply for graphics, but honestly I don't use the machine enough to justify it... I'm a DP who colors and cuts on occasion.
For 200 bucks, I'll pick up a 580 just to give it a try. Just to confirm, I don't need to flash it or anything, it just works on OSX yeah? Thanks again

Correct. If you want to see boot screen, then install Open Core.

Also, very important point I forgot to mention, RX580 only works with OS 10.14 (Mojave) and up. That means you will need to first upgrade your High Sierra to Mojave and that in itself means, you will be forced by Apple to do a firmware upgrade (144.0.0.0). Follow the direction for that using your 908ti card. I believe this card is Metal capable. Once you do the firmware upgrade, you'll be able to install Mojave and then your RX580 will work without any additional drivers.

Interesting development for anyone interested. I reverted up to build 52.1.4 and cuda still works. BUT, I did an export test and when CUDA is on, it's about 50% slower to export than in OPEN GL. Testing a single clip, took 8 minutes via CUDA, and only 3.5 minutes via open GL. No idea what's going on, but thought I'd let others know my findings
