  1. #1 Decklink issue
    Hi all,

I just want to share an experience with RED ONE and BlackmagicDesign Decklink Extreme 2 cards. Hopefully I'm not the only one, because nobody responds to problems of one...

About one month ago I have replaced old Decklink Extreme with the new (and now the only) version with extra HDMI inputs. There were just occasional one-frame dropouts trying to capture RED SDI output with the old Decklink. Since I'm using it just for video assist, I didn't care too much.

Using new Decklink however, huge problem happened. SDI out from RED was dropping out heavily, 3-5 seconds blackout each 10-30 seconds.

I have replaced the card for another piece - same thing.
I have connected RED SDI thru HDLinkPro to monitor - same thing. Always dropping out.

Then I've connected PhantomHD (set to 720p50 out) to the same Decklink and voila! - it ran like a charm, no single frame dropout.

So I've sent our RED ONE to Red service. It took them 1 week, to do - nothing. I don't know what they did, because nothing changed. Not a single reply, no report. They ignore my emails...

It's really hard to guess if the new Decklink cards are faulty, or if the RED ONE sdi out is not ok.
Using RED with Aja or an SDI monitor - it works.
Using Decklink with any other sdi source - it works.

Can those companies solve the mystery of incompatibility?

You mean PsF - Progressive Segmented Frame?

AFAIK, there is no PsF mode in HD 720. I think, there is no interlace standard, either.

Vladus, sounds like a problem, just out of curiosity does it work when the RED is set to 50P, 23.98 or 59.98?

Wow, thanks camlight, I was about to order a camwave for my steadicam work. Have you tried solving the problem with some sort of hardware (converter) between the RED and the CamWave?

You can set RED output to 720p50 or 720p59.98, but the problem is the same.
There is no 23.98 in RED menu.

I'd like to believe this is not the problem of RED, but then I don't understand why is their tech.support so quiet...

They are working on a solution, the problem is that 24 or 25 p need a very clear and clean signal for transporting and decoding. You have more" room" for mistakes in a signal of 2 times the same field sending around than only one change to send 1 frame. If you know what i mean.

That was explaint to me at the IBC in Amsterdam after i returnd the sender to our local store.

No other solution tha work under 50p and in 720. Or 23.98 and 29.98 if i recall this god.

Have any of you tested your SDI outs for extreme amounts of jitter? I havent but I'm not using RED's SDI outs at all currently but might pretty soon.
