We don't know what size sensor EPIC has, RED has never said it was bigger. All info out there pertaining to such is pure speculation. I think a lot of people have made an assumption based on the NAB '08 brochure which said "FULL FRAME S35MM MYSTERIUM SENSOR". However, this same "FULL FRAME S35MM..." verbage is also there on the RED One 4K camera page.

Sensor size has nothing to do with focal length. Focal length is just that, the length from the focal point/plane to the front optical element(s). Changing the size of the imaging plane (sensor area, film area, etc..), you affect the field of view, the same way you gain a smaller FOV by cropping a 4K frame to a 2K frame.

I fully expect EPIC to have a S35MM sized sensor, after all, that is what RED's lenses provide coverage for and Jim has confirmed that we will have Nikon mount options for sure and others. NAB prototypes and subsequent images show EPIC using the same adjustable mount we see on the RED One. I know EPIC "has changed" and we should find out what that means in the next couple months, but I would think the same sort of mount design and the S35MM sensor to remain constant.

You haven't missed anything. Some people are just making wild-ass guesses.

Will all due respect to every person, please let me threat some ideas - NOT persons - without my usual white gloves.
I'm also tired of trying to be just ironic, so please forgive me, now I will just let out the first shit that knoks and wants to get out of my mouth at this N° time that I read what I can only judge as annoyingly inappropriate, and especially because I don't like to see some innocent one made shut up as if he were an idiot or an avaric (? english correct me please)

if you can get an epic, you can get a set of arri primes

If you can get Epic and Arri Primes, you are the type of person who drives a limited edition Porsche, nice assumption. And this also means that you have a heated swimming pool in each of your property illuminated by night. because you must, it's written in the equations that rule your (??) life. Which also means, that you have certainly the money to buy two Epics, therefore... also three, because you must afford them all, the moment you enter an Epic related internet forum. So, why try to save some money at some point?
It's pointless to save money if you could, right? Try to do it only when you can't, you have better luck.
We are not talking about a cheaper accessory that is insignificant compared to the camera.
We are talking about a lens sets that costs many times the camera, right?
Is some crazy "idiot" allowed to "see things" his/her way, that is, just afford or want to spend for a camera and buy or use his/her choice of lenses for whatever reason, if they may be going to have a compatible mount or adapter (not saying they will, here)?
    What's wrong with choice?
Will all due respect, I think your is not a usefull answer at all.
Again, one simply ask a question and some all knowing accountant basically makes you shut up.
For the record, here we have another beauty:
"HEllo, Just curious, will EPIC ever allow other mounts for like COntax or Nikon lenses?"... and you reply that he must certainly afford Arri Primes - so what, should this imply the guy is avaric or stupid? You also seem to know his pockets better then him.
Can't you imagine at all that he may of course afford an Epic but perhaps not Arri Primes right know? Why should one afford something instantly? Could he not be an Oil businessman?
    Sci-fi hypothesis? who knows? I certainly don't.
Mine is just a crazy hypothesis, sirs. So don't take it too seriously, because I don't read this forum too much. Too many assumpions, too little information.
Akube, please don't take it personally, I'm only against your reaction - don't know about your ideas - but regardless any technical aspect we may discuss about, this time you were wrong. Also with the maths. I'm sure you understand, if you think about it for 1 second.
bye bye (for this week, I guess).

"I dont think epic is intended towards the contax nikon boys."
Remember nikon makes not only fantastic zooms, but also some of the best tele's in the world, used by many filmakers. That's why Red also provides a Nikon mount for everybody who wish to use them, and not only for jerks and mythical silly Nikon fanatics; and there is nothing wrong or unreal with it. It's an excellent option indeed that comes extremely handy because you may find Nikon lenses also in an arctic base or in a camera shop in a village upon the swamp, should you suddenly loose or be not comfortable or not able to carry your big and precious Arri set case.

Thanks for the GREAT post! I so agree! And I'm not a "Nikon Boy", nor an "Arrillionaire" or a "Cooke-anthropist"... Good to hear from down to earth people sometimes... Gear snobism is prohibited here, I wish!

Cinemano, I'd suggest to just ignore all the bullshit on the forum and always start important questions with "Red team, please can you tell me...", so you can avoid the tons of nothing from everybody (including me).
Less talking, and straight from the source.
This may also push Red men to finally make pages of pure, immaculate information and news at the Red site, clear, easy to read, and most of all, separate from the zoo.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons to buy Zeiss UPs but I doubt that they'll be sharper. They are also both T1.9. I won't include Master primes in the comparison for the same reason I wouldn't include the Lakers when talking about the NFL. They aren't in the same league.
I fully expect the Red primes to live up to their expectations, but the UPs will still have the edge on build quality and of course there are many more focal lengths to choose from.

I appreciate for some focal lengths they will be the same advertised t-stop. However there will be more than a stop difference between a UP 16/14mm and the Red 15mm. This is one of the reasons I am happy with ultra primes. Consistent stop does make life easy.

As for the different league analogy? The Red lenses are the lenses playing in a different league. UP, S4 and Master primes have more in common in terms of pricing than any other lens has with Red primes. Our 12mm UP costs a fair bit more than the whole set of 5 Red primes.

    Interesting lens times ahead..
