Have you gotten any render time comparisons between R3D and RR? How does it holdup? R3D is slowly but surely becoming the swiss army knife of the Red post world. Awesome stuff Conrad.

It can work over multiple nodes through qmaster and redline too right? That's the reason for the 32 processors?

Yes, but that's not perfect. We are usually working in ProRes. So, not to loose dynamic range going from 12 to 10 bit, we'd need a first light correction for most clips. Since this correction would be the same for one lighting situation or even location in most cases, it would be great to assign a 'master' RSX to any such group.

    I'll buy it anyway!

do i need any additional software installed on the computer where r3d data manager is installed - to be capable to use all options included in new version?

or i can use it just as standalone program WITHOUT any other programs - i.e. red cine, red alert, redline etc.
just, say different codecs and QT itself?

Anyone tested the render functions yet? I've been having a few probs with rendering out files more than once.

I can't get individual RDC folders to render the R3d's from Data Manager. If i send the entire RDM folder to Data Manager it begins transcoding to QT but it seems quite slow. I'm exporting anamorphic material from 4k at half debayer to 720p ProResHQ with an RSX assigned for all clips in that folder. 4 processors hitting it and its taking quite a bit longer than RR. I really like the anamorphic setting though. That seems to work well.

Well, some of the codecs are only installed with FCP, so you will need that. You may want the avid codec, so thats separate. Or you could just not use any of the prores, dvcprohd or DNxHD codecs. And you'll need a copy of red alert installed.

    Thanks.

Please contact us directly with what you are trying to do. I have been rendering thousands of times (literally) with the same set of files, no issues.

    Thanks.

It should be about the same as RR, if not a bit better. When comparing to RR, make sure you have identical settings, as thats a big factor.

Right now, to do an individual RDC, you will need to separate it and set the source as the directory above it. Its designed to do whole batches (ie. a RDM).

    Thanks.

I'll speed test the two with same settings and report back.
Does the Anamorphic setting desqueeze the image? It didn't desqueeze a test i did earlier shot in 4k ana mode (16:9 with guides) with Lomo anamorphic lenses. I selected the Anamorphic setting and set it to 2.4:0 with cropping on. The result was still squeezed with the crop. Is it supposed to do the desqueeze?

We discovered an issue where the Quicktime Batch Render was not setting the debayer render resolution properly. Consequently it was always doing a full quality debayer, not a half quality or other settings. This lead to the program being slower than RedRushes with the same settings.

We have fixed that, and it works properly. In fact, we now beat out RedRushes in a time test, as noted below:

This was done on a MacBook Pro, 2.33Ghz, 2Gb, and we were processing 2k files for ProResHQ 1080. You'll notice that we are a little more specific in the GUI now also, with "Camera/RSX default" now being the default for most Rendering options.

So we have a couple of other things to code up and we should have a new version out soon.

    Thanks.
