I want to use the real time HD-SDI output from my Scratch Cine system to create DNxHD files. What i/o will I need on the Avid system? Will it be able to write out the DNxHD files to a FW800 external drive?

Minimum would be either the new Nitris DX hardware or an old Adrenaline with DNxcel HD board. OR a fast computer and a Mojo DX (it doesn't have a hardware DNxHD encoder, so does so in software).

It should be able to write DNxHD files to a FW800 external drive - FW800 should definitely support the datarate.

Be aware the old Adrenalines used the FW bus to connect to the acceleration hardware. So you might want to check you have a spare FW800 bus free (similar to FCP with AJA Io or MOTU V4HD - you need things on a separate bus).

The new Mojo DX and Nitris DX things use PCI Express for the hardware so it should be faster and leave the FW800 bus free.

That's just my 2c as a cheapskate Avid hacker - please check with the folks whose Avid you're using preferably ;)

Alternately, for your external drive you could just use the eSATA connector - most external drives have those nowadays and it should be the same speed as if you attached the drive internally.

Blair - can you really playback 24fps or 25fps with the actual scratch cine version on Red build 16 or build 17 ?
So maximum we get is around 21 fps at the moment. Assimilate is saying that RED is responsible for that in cause of the new codec version.

Is this still true with 17?

    Ouch, that's a bummer...

Build 17 not in Max mode is realtime in tests so far.

Also - let's not get into a blame game of any kind. RED makes decisions that are in the best interest of the camera and acquiring footage. I think that's what everybody wants from the camera!

Sometimes, those decisions have implications into post. We work closely with RED, and maintaining realtime performance is incredibly important for both companies.

    Best,

Luki, we do not blame - just telling the truth - and so far we have a scratch cine system we cannot use it on our RED BOXX - we bought it to get the VTR solution - but with build 16 and 17 19fps is maxiumum. we know from other people getting around 21 on a faster machine.

we are waiting for any solution from you - but maybe there is a little communication problem...

I just hope that when I can no longer make the lease payments on my Scratch Cine system it doesn't ruin my credit for 10 years :help:

In any case, has anyone tested non-Max mode build 16 frame rates?

I'm getting 25fps with build 16 footage at 4k 2:1. You can play directly in to avid using an adrenaline with hd board. Great for quick turnaround projects.
