Zeiss PL mount Lenses!

Hi Red buddies,

I got my hands on a set of Zeiss Primes MKII Standard PL mount, after doing some research I have come to the conclusion that these are the best deal in lenses for the RED. They are small and are fast, the have great color, crispness, reliable and have been proven on hundreds of big budget films.

I am wondering if there are any experts here who might know any downside to these lenses that i might not have considered. They guy i got them from has 2 more sets, I am considering buying as well. they are cheaper than the Red sets.

Yes used, I had them checked out buy this guy in LA who is Lens Tech and they are all in good shape.

I paid 17,500.

I would be interested to see their performance on a Red camera. They were very good lenses, originally designed 30 years ago. Stanley Kubrick used the MK 1's + a Cooke 20-100 on 'The Shining' . I can tell which shots are Zeiss and which are Cooke!

Hi Mark,

I own SuperSpeeds & the Cooke, to me it's very obvious, color is the first give away, the Zeiss have a cool blue tint and the focus fall off is quicker. With modern digital color correction I doubt I could tell. Nothing wrong with either, just slightly different!

Why? i was told by the lens tech the opposite, he said the Zeiss would probably be better. They originaly listed for much more $.

Has lens technology changed that much that they can now make a better lens cheaper?

The standard speed lenses are ok, but at that price you should look for Super Speeds...the super speeds might look better than Red lenses but I doubt the standards will. Until we get them, the jury is out though.

$17k is too high, the lenses usually go for about $1500 each. I have a few standard speeds that I use for rig shots (bikes, etc)...if I were you I would wait on the Red Primes for $2k more. Remember the Red Primes have the i technology too.
