  1. #1 Request for more timelapse options
Currently, there are no real options for timelapse recording between 1fps and 24fps, (unless I am missing something). The result is that if I need a 600 frames during a 5 minute time period, I have to record at realtime for that entire section, wasting media space, and creating a R3D file that is difficult to manage. I suggest the following options:

    1fps
    2fps
    4fps
    8fps
    16fps

Smaller increments would be better, but I'll take what I can get. Is this possible in the next build?

    Thanks,
    Phil

You can use varispeed for 1-24fps.

OK, so I was looking looking in the wrong place. I feel dumb!

    Thanks,

    Phil,
Why not go with the 5DMK2? It's lighter, uses RAW, and can do long exposures too.

    Hi cd,

I actually have used Canons for still timelapse. I don't if the 5KMK2 will solve my issues, but had the following limitations:

I couldn't use RAW because I never found a good workflow for batch processing sequences.

They were also too big to capture over 1000 frames on a card, so I used PJPEG.

Due to the iris closing down for each frame and basically setting a new position each time, there are slight variations in exposure causing visible flicker. Some lenses work better than others, but it was often a problem.

    Thanks!
    Phil

    Hey Deanan,

Despite the fact that I still feel silly for not catching the varispeed option, I think my recommendation still has merit. It would make the timelapse page of the menu more comprehensive.

I use nothing but AE now. It will ingest RAW sequences directly and render out gorgeous masters.

With Red One with 1/2 shutter you will have problems with black shading . First of all you need to do it every time you go to 1/2 , but it dose not help. Sow better to use Canon for 1/2 time laps :) .You can connect it to Laptop and with software just copy files to Mac. Only one problem is that interval will be 4 seconds , and with red interval can be 1 second.

Really? It didn't use to. Let's see, when was the last time I checked? Oh well, I'm having a hard time keeping up, I must be getting old.

    The entertainment's free.

    Hi Phil,
Yes, Tom is right. AECS3 will recognize the Raw files. It works great.
Check out Tom's Timelapse discussion forum, there's a lot there...solutions for the flicker problem found there too.

I have managed to avoid the flicker problem largely because I favor keeping the lens open. RED does slow-mo great but DSLR has long exposures, which I love to use.

I only mentioned the D5MK2 because of the resolution...so you can do 4k.
The Canon 40D is more than enough for HD and the file sizes are small enough.

    ps. We're ALL getting old.
    Cheers,
    cd
