Red has dropped an information A-bomb, and right now I think most of us are still trying to get our heads round what these announcements might mean to our own circumstances. Clearly there are still many bits of the jigsaw to complete, but it seems to me that Red’s overall goal is to provide us with what we want. Whatever that might be.

I’d like to say a huge “Thank you” to the entire Red team for working tirelessly to deliver what their customers want (in fact, generally a lot more than we dare to want).

Rather than taking a “They want WHAT? These guys have no clue” and falling off the chair laughing stance, it seems much more a case of “They want WHAT?….Uhh, actually, that’s not such a bad idea…can we do that…in fact, can we do better than that?”. And then falling off the chair laughing at what the reaction will be.

    So thanks, guys. Sincerely.

    Jim,

After a deep introspective analysis, and after reading the hundreds of responses to the great party last night, I think that, as always, RED needs to hear this community's opinion, and fast!

I, for one, am not that pleased with the final results: Red One was left as a second class citizen among the Red family of cameras; really an inconclusive project; which all the promises received (written or perceived, it really does not matter now) were not fulfilled (more DR latitude, modularity, etc.).

Just food for thoughts since I do think the news were not all what we expected (some better, some confusing), and are borderline disappointing for the Red One owners, specially for the ones that got on board even without a clear vision of what we were buying.

    Respectfully,
    Luis Otero

With all due respect, your Red One is still the same camera it was two days ago. It didn't suddenly stop working on November 13th. Jim has made it clear that the upgrade path for the R1 is open-ended, and owners of that camera can't really expect Red to keep looking in the rear-view mirror and make sure they don't limit future products to avoid putting the R1 in the shade.

I still shoot with a Canon 20D, even though it is several years and upgrades out of date. It still takes great images and I'm not in the least offended that Canon had the temerity to upgrade to the 30D and the 40D without bothering to consult me. My 20D is not cutting-edge, but it's far from obsolete.

None of these new offerings is likely to be available for at least 9 months, and I'm sure you will get a great deal of value from your R1 before the new cameras hit the market.

Without a doubt, I will be disappointed if Red will be keeping looking in the rear-view mirror. However, I also will be as disappointed if the punch-list of promises or expectations we early adopters have (myself #711) is dropped due to Scarlet and /or Epic. I bet you will also be too.

    Just food for thoughts...

    An outsider opinion
    --------------------

Being on these forums those last 2 days was a very enlightening experience.

Let me start by saying that I am not YET a Red owner, I confirmed my order yesterday and I am willing to pay the full amount for an Epic immediately and get Red one meanwhile (and loose a bit on the acessories).
NOW I Believe in Red as a revolutionary company.

You'll say that I am among the lucky ones who have not put their hard earned money into an R1 and are being screwed by Big Jim.

I have read hundreds of narrow, self-pity, petit-bourgeois opinions.
What is really amazing is that the RED community is supposed to gather the most daring,

unconventional and independent content creators....somehow the avant-garde of the opinion makers....what I've seen is a many many Selfportrait shooters !

I've seen regular consumers complaining of not have being screwed the regular and usual way.

    Regular screwing:
Jim should have announced the 3K fixed lens Scarlet, the SS35 EPIC with the R1 to Epic upgrade path, and the 28 K ogre to get news headlines, and everybody would have been very happy: Great ! Awesome ! You Rock etc...A year later he'd announce the rest of the line up with the sensor upgrade for R1

What consumers really want is shiny upgrades not revolutions.
I am a guy from the 3rd world, for me Obama is a shiny upgrade...
Steve Jobs got it... Jim Jannard didn't.

If you're thinking from a revolution leader pov and not from a CEO's then you should put first what you think best for the COMMUNITY (pls allow me the cliche, because it is not one):

In 18 or 24 months from today there will be 50 000 Red cameras shooting film quality images (45000 scarlet and 5000 R1 and epic) with 48'000 of them satisfied and happy and 2000 feeling screwed....that makes 96% of satisfied customers and 10 times more people that can afford to do it, if it was my call I wouldn't hesitate, and Jim didn't and he's right.

If I get my R1 today, it will take me at least a year to be able to match the experience and the workflow know how of the early R1 owners (including those with a sour feeling), this plus should be somehow in your financial equation

I am almost sure that it is the Scarlet that convinced Adobe to go "Native support" and definitely not the Epic. Even the 2000 unsatisfied guys will benefit from this.

A final cliche: Revolutions DO make innocent victims but they also change the World. Sony make victims to keep the World as is.

    Again,

Just food for thoughts... I think we feel as owner and part of this revolution as the real owner of the company.

But again, just food for thoughts...

I have to agree with Moir. There is a certain mentality that thinks that since we decided to jump on board early we should be protected "in perpetuity" from technological advances. I knew that when I climbed aboard this starship that I was taking a risk. But oh what a risk it has been. My camera produces stunning images, my computer system still cannot handle 4K because it is still playing catch-up and I have already made a profit with the Red. Only thing left is to pay off the balance and press on. Life doesn't stand still and it would be foolish to think otherwise. Jim has given me protection by "buying back" my camera should I desire to step up to Epic, which I plan to do.

But I'm not going to right away. Firstly, Epic ain't here yet and won't be for a good while. Secondly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with my camera and the way it is built, it will last a very long time. I'm extremely happy with the way things are turning out with Red.

I went to NAB last year to lay my hands on the camera and to meet the folks behind the scam. Said hey to and shook Jim's hand, talked with Ted, Michael, Kelly, et all, watched 4K footage in awe and came away reassured. There is nothing in yesterday's announcements that has diminished my enthusiasm for this company or its products. On the contrary, I'm stoked. Can you imagine if other companies had a similar model that allowed for blatant criticism and ridicule of its products and customer service in a public forum? Red is not hiding and they are still delivering the goods. Amazing.

Luis, Unfortunately, History taught us that revolutions, even the "best" ones for a certain community, do eat their children first.

What I wrote in the abv post is not meant to be harsh, controversial but not harsh. if it sounds so I apologize

    Again,

Just food for thoughts, not bitching around! The best solutions offered by Red and today enjoyed by us came from food for thought by the community... Also, I just want to have assurance that the promises are not dropped, specially if we do not even have a stable work flow.

    JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHTS...

Clarification: I am EXTREMELY happy with my Red One.:greedy:
