  1. #1 capture
this is my first time using this forum but i need a help understanding the proposed capture devices for the Red and the difference between the 2 drives on offer. Do I need both drives as well as the ethernet output to make the camera truely functional.

No need to capture. The RED-DRIVE behaves like any other external drive. Simply hook it up to your computer and copy the files off. The different flash options can be used if you want more reliability (against drive failure and such) or a smaller integrated package.

Hello. This is my first time too. My question is simple: What will I get If I use the Fire Wire 800 connector to capture footage from Red? Can I capture 4k trough Fire Wire, for example?

If we have Mac Pro, do you think that besides the Fire Wire 800 it is good to get the Aja Io HD, in order to get the best possible quality?

We go to local and cable stations (no HD), however we want to achieve the best quality.

    Thanks

as far as i know you cannot capture from red camera over 1394a/b to computer ...
i believe the AJA i/o basically takes the RED 1080 rgb data and converts it into the proRes codec in real time = you are ready to edit NOW ... i think proRes is 4:2:2 color space so depending on your needs in some cases leaving the RED RGB 4:4:4 might be better for certain situations vs converting to proRes ..

the best is REDcode RAW data and
you'll have to weigh the benefits of REDcode RAW vs. RGB for your business situation...

You're not "capturing" the 4Kredcode files via firewire 800, you're just transferring files from one hard drive to another: REDDrive to whatever drive/raid combo you are using, (firewire 800 is the second fastest way to do this for an external drive; esata being the fastest).
You don't need an AJA card to get the footage into your NLE but you may need it to get the movie out again, that's up to you..
