we were shooting the other day on build 17 and were in 2k trying to do varispeed (120fps) and couldn't get it to go past 100fps.

we tried many things (16:9., 2:1, changing the shutter speed to 1/120th before entering varispeed etc.) and nothing seemed to work, did we loose 120fps or did i just do something really dumb? i've never had a problem before (earlier builds)

    RC28 or 36?
    Drive or CF?

These are the most likely culprits impacting your frame rate in varispeed.

120fps is only possible to RED Drive and in 2K 2:1 RC28.

It might also work to the new 16GB CF cards as they are a lot faster, but I don't have any of those yet to try it.

    Just tried it out:

Timebase 25 frames, 16 gb cf cards
    2K 16:9 RC36: 90 frames
    2K 2:1 RC 36: 105 frames
    2K 2:1 RC 28: 120 frames

The old 8 gb cards allowed a setting of 2K 2:1 RC28 113 frames, but would produces a massive amount of dropped frames after a short while. 110 frames were ok.

The new 120 frames setting to 16 gb cards is solid. No dropped frames.

Can you tell me...My RED footage is shot at 25 fps. Can I still edit it in Final Cut Pro using RED FCP log and transfer plug in without transcoding it to ProRes?

Yes you can. Except if you're playing with 4k 2/1 footage or 4K 16/9 you'll not be able to get a real time running.
