I'd like to know what would require upgrading to transform the Epic X to a monstro sensor? Does it require a whole new brain, or just a sensor swap like the R1?

It seems the R1 will handle a Monstro upgrade with its existing processing capacity, so it would seem ridiculous to need a processor upgrade to upgrade the Epic X to monstro, assuming it has more processing power?

If the Epic X will have a paid Monstro upgrade path for about $5000, its an amazing deal, in my mind. If not, it seems to me more of a cul-de-sac

Also, is redcode 250 a typo, or a different recording mode than redcode 225?

Does anyone have/or read any answers?

sorry if this is a repeat.

    thanks in advance

Thats what I'm thinking. If that is the case, whats the point of a modular system, when upgrading only the sensor (rather than processors also, as is the case with the R1) is cheaper? Makes no sense so far.

That's what I am curious about also. Considering R1 has sensor upgrades and had a new board i/pin?

I was unhappy at the lack of processor upgradeability in the R1, which seemed a staggering oversight to me, and frankly Red saying they thought only sensors would need upgrading in the future seems almost surreal. I won't even mention the "O" word, you know the one.

I was initially very excited about EpicX, but now I've studied it further, it seems we have an option to upgrade the processor, get onboard the modular program, but with a very expensive sensor upgrade route if thats the path we take. Its flip, then flop. I definately need a new brain to work out whats going on with all these other proposed brains.

The fact is, I'm hoping to get my hands on a camera I can settle down with for sometime (ie years and years), hopefully that doesn't need to boot for a minute, is a little lighter if possible than the R1, and has the highest spec. sensor available (obviously). The target is something akin to a 35mm cine camera (though lighter!), and the only technical hurdle left for Red is that little bit more DR, though we assume they're already there behind the scenes.

I just don't believe that goal will be achieved with a 12bit sensor frankly (is it mathematically possible even? without dropping DR from the original R1 specs ?). Increased redcode rates may help other aspects of image quality, especially for higher frame rates.

A 12bit sensor has a maximum of 4096 luminance levels. A 16bit sensor has a theoretical maximum of 65535. With everything costing so much, I can't justify jumping onto another 12bit sensor while an improved 16bit Red sensor ALREADY EXISTS, it goes against every instinct in my body. Obviously Red could have kept Monstro secret, but they didn't for their own reasons..
Monstro seems more significant to me than FPS.

So, If I'm being hurded into sticking with my R1 and upgrading only the sensor, its working, though I'd rather skip the Mysterium X upgrade and go straight to Monstro.

I'm not sure why Epic X is using a mysterium x (select) sensor. The cheaper cameras, yes, Epic X, no. Makes no sense, apart from the fact it'll be the first sensor available I believe, which will allow R1 owners to get first shot at the new cameras.

I'd rather wait frankly for something Monstro, Epic X will be released too early for me to upgrade anyway, so there's no rental advantage to help me out. I'd rather wait anyway until I know how the phantom audio performs also

Right now, the camera that covers all bases is $33k-$17.5k+(extra modules?).

Guys I think there never was a mention of an EPIC-X --> Monstro Upgrade in the first place.

Because RED has a secret plan to disappoint our customers somewhere along the way. :-)

You see, this is all a setup. We lull our customers to sleep with great specs, low prices, a compact and modular system that is flexible and upgradeable, full value trade-ins, free upgrades... then WHAMMY! We get you! Somewhere the shoe will drop. It is likely to come in the form of actually asking our customers to pay for something. "-)

We are not going to answer more questions now about a system you can't buy for several months. We have given a view of the future to help our customers begin to ponder what they will do next. But not next after next... yet.

    (Sarcasm in good fun...)

Jim, I really like the scam! I wish there were more of you in this world. The history books are full of individuals so passionate about their cause that they transformed that little portion of the world they occupied, and we benefit from their passion. You happened to find your niche, thank God.

My only concern is getting a rough $ estimate for the modules and such so I can put together a rough budget.

Looks like you bought the sensor mfg. good move.......now hyper innovation can occur. You guys must be having the time of your life making this thing Go.

    Thanks

Don't let the static noise ruin the ride.
