  1. #1 Avid and Audio
    Hi All,

What is the latest news with audio on RED.

I tried using redrushes but the ale that I brought into MC didn't have the audio tracks and I couldn't modify the clip.

    How is this done?

    Thanks

    Max

The steps to modify a master clip after an ALE import is detailed in the Avid/RED Step by Step guide on avid.com/red. Basically after an ALE import, select ALL then go to clip menu/modify, select tracks and add A1A2, etc., as needed. Click OK and the clips will now have audio. Do this before you merge any of the QuickTimes.

REDrushes does not propagate the audio information from its source files into ALE at this time so it needs to be modified after the fact.

    Hi Michael,

When I tried to modify the clip it says it can't be modified because it is a master clip.

    Cheers

You need to modify it before you you do anything else - right after the ALE import and before the merge.

If that fails (and I don't know why it would) you can always edit the ALE file before import - do a search and replace for "V" (whole world only) with VA1A2 as needed. Import then continue the merge.

Anybody have any advice on rendering DNxHD QuickTimes out of RedRushes with audio that Avid will read? When creating proxies in RedRushes you can choose "make Avid compatible audio", but when rendering out to DNxHD the audio I get is not compatible. It is 32 bit big endian, which Avid does not like.

V3.0.5 and later fixes that problem.

Thanks Michael. That's good news, as I have batch converted a whole load of rushes to DNxHD36 for an offline, and was not looking forward to re-doing them all to fix the audio. So if the Avid is updated to 3.0.5 it will read the audio from my existing files?

Or if you want (or need) to edit in an older version of Avid, look for the free Livid Batch Export Utility and do a batch conversion of a folder of QTs with 32 bit audio to a folder of QTs with 16 bit audio.

Yes it's another step, but it's almost real time and can be run unattended.
Can also be used to create e.g. 14:1 SD media that can't be created directly with Red Rushes.

    regards
