I know lots of guys who are very good at what they do, but don't do it for a living. I'm shooting a rock band that does this very thing. I don't do this for a living, but I do an OK job at it and get paid for it. I don't even advertise because I would be too busy - word of mouth only. I enjoy the creativity and challenge of videography. But what you have here is a camera that has potential to allow you to do great things, but also is within the reach of many people's pocketbook. I didn't go to the Sundance Film Festival. I just ski there. I want to buy a nice HD camera, but most of what I see right now is not found on just one camera. I can't go out buying a bunch of cameras and have it be obsolete a few months later. I have one of those already. If Red is trying to appeal to just a professional market, why then the seemingly low price? Promised date? I do recall reading here that NAB was the day orders were going to be taken for one version of the Scarlet due this Summer.
We are a bit different because we "think out loud". We have been quick to say that things "can and will change"... actually from the beginning. We give our best estimate of what's happening. If something changes, we say so. Sometimes it is good news... like more features and lower prices. Sometimes it is bad news... like delays. We have asked if people want us to change the methodology and have heard a resounding "NO". And we can't take orders at NAB... because we won't be there. :-)

Ok. So should I buy another camera and not have the funds to buy yours later? I'll need two BTW. Not in too much of a hurry, but people are showing up with their consumer hd cams and it's annoying. Some show up with some P2 cams though. Fortunately, they can't shoot worth a crap and my editing is still impressive enough to keep the referrals coming - more than I want actually.
Jim is correct when he says that his company "thinks out loud". By doing that he and RED open themselves up for excitement and frustration. But in this new era of 'transpanency' I welcome it.
I can wait for Epic and Scarlett. Wait long enough for Jim and the gang to make the best camera possible for the moment.
I shoot 35mm most of the time. But I also shoot RED. And I have shot with genesis when it is appropriate.
The fact that I will be able to turn my RED in for FULL trade-in is an amazingly new business model. If I bought a Prius for 25,000 and then 3 years later Toyota said that I could trade it in for a Camry (at 35,000) and get a full trade-in on my 25,000 what would you think.
Red One is not the perfect camera. No camera is perfect for every situation. But it worked for "Knowing". My camera just worked for a shot for "Book of Eli"
What is amazing is that Jim is solidly behind supporting us through all of this. I don't fear that RED will abandon us.
Peter
Is there a date / location posted for Red Day yet?
