couldn't you just remove the padding in the old cable. i don't see a reason for it not to work. Doesn't make sense. Is there anything inside the connectors other than cable in the 2nd and 3rd picture?

The issue is there IS something NORMALLY in the first cable, so don't use it unless you are 100% certain.

In the studio we generally reference 0vu to -20db. That being said you always need to keep in mind your source audio and its dynamic range and attacks. Just like picture digital is digital and if you overload your input you got garbage baby. If your sound person can through a limiter on the feed since you're using RED as your reference for edit that would help to control your peaks.
