USB audio input - one could use any USB audio preamp, USB mic, or even USB mixers...
I would go with that as well. I think there absolutely should be a way to get digital audio inside, whether it's directly with AES/EBU, SPDF, or USB, although the latter would still require a unique driver somewhere in the pipeline to communicate with USB audio interfaces.

I seriously don't think USB might be the best option for this...

AES won't be for me either (but it has a descent plug at least),
8ch adat would even be better,

    or even madi...

nice suggestions guys, but i think we're pretty much requesting a Digital Audio Recorder here. I think the most important parts will be: XLR Plugs, phantom powering, 24bit 48khz (dynamic range is more important than sampling frequency), and above all are top notch preamps. If these are not present, then everything else doesnt matter.

I've used the 702T recorder and just ordered the H4N which are both 24bit recorders. I believe this is a chance for Red to be the first to offer on board 24bit recording and it should be possible.

BTW, sampling frequency would be more critical in music recording which is often recorded seperately. Most of the Scarlet's audio uses will be for dialogue recording and 24bit 48khz has become the standard.
